Is this a story or did this really happen?

Oh it really did happen.  We even went back to the spot with a metal detector when the water was down but couldn't find it.

To be fair, the ring was loose to begin with.  I now have a properly-sized replacement ring, but I still won't wear it while I'm fishing.

Pocket knife, boat anchor, hats, and a fishing stringer are the things I can think of right now.

My daughter reminded my of something else I lost over the side....HER!

She was a little bitty thing and we just got back to the dock after bream fishing. She caught a three pound Channel Cat, and I held it up to take a picture, and dropped it right on her little feet. She got stuck by the pec fin and was bawling out loud as I comforted her and tried to stop the bleeding. She was ready to go then, so I cranked up and went back to the dock. She stood on the front of the boat, and when I stepped off the boat, onto the dock, the bow swiftly rose and tossed her overboard!. Naturally, I had her in a life vest, so she popped right up and started the instinctive dog paddle. I pulled her out and gave her my dry clothes to wear for the trip home. I went home in my undies! Boy, did I get an earfull when she started blabbing to mom!

Surprisingly, she still wanted me to take her fishing, and we've enjoyed many days on the water since! Mom still mad! 😐

I've lost rods and caught them back. I lost an $800 pair of Rx sunglasses. That was a painful one to tell the wife. I've dropped tools working on the motor while on the water. And, I lost a Pastor. Yep. My Pastor went out with me in a jon boat. The water was about 50 degrees. The back seat was a little wobbly and he was warned to leave it down and not put the post on it. He put the 13" post on it, set the hook hard and in the drink he went. He never went with me again. HA!!

I’ve been pretty lucky.  Lost pliers last year, and a rod sleeve that ejected off the rod when running down the lake.  Had a funny episode with a buddy when I took a brand new Rapala Rip Stop jerkbait out, and caught a pike on the first cast.  Got him in the net safely (no leader) and he thrashed around and tossed the lure in the net.  I said perfect, and pulled the lure out and tossed it out of my way into the lake.  Let the pike go and realized he’d snipped the line when he thrashed in the net. lol

I did also knock a combo over the side this year, but I quickly plunged my arm over the side and pinned it against the side of the boat.  Amazing how fast I can move when about $400 is sinking.

As for wedding rings… I was hunting turkeys with friends in Oklahoma years ago.  We were headed home, stopped in Kansas when I realized my wedding ring was gone.  Long story short, my buddy found it in a towel in the laundry basket at his house - had slipped off my finger when drying off after a shower.  Buddy mailed it back to me, so all good.  I still joke that “I lost my wedding ring in Oklahoma” should be a country song. 😆

Here's my list, which actually covers several years on the water,

recreationally & professionally.

You may notice some repeat offenders.

Sunglasses - 5 pair plus.

Ball Caps - Several

A 10 lb mushroom anchor (don't ask)

Deck/Boat shoes - some right foot, some left.

Had a marker buoy sink out of sight one time, that was fun.

Lost an assortment to tools standing in the surf at night.

And finally, I've lost my mind more times than I am willing to admit.

In fact it's mostly half gone right now.

🤪

After parking the truck and trailer the wife got back in the boat. Before putting her pfd on she wanted to remove her hooded sweatshirt as it was getting warm. I heard a plop in the water and asked what that was and she responded with probably a fish. I then asked her for the key fob back and she couldn’t find it. Well I now know what the plop sound was.

Several years back I caught a pickerel. Unhooked it with pliers, tossed the pliers over the side of the boat while still holding the pickerel. Oops.

That’s the only thing that I know of. Probably lost a lot more and never realized.

IN the late 60s, early 70s when I lived in Florida and would take a 14f motorized rowboat out in the bay near the St. Pete-Tampa causeway to catch Tarpon I lost several things overboard. I was fishing with what was basically bass fishing gear except heavier line. Anyway, hooking into a Tarpon that weighted 40 plus pounds was exciting to say the least. It often led to being dragged around the bay while trying to control the fish (an exercise in futility for the most part) while trying not to swamp the boat. While doing that, I lost...hat, sunglasses, shoes, 2 different rods and reels, sunscreen, bottles of water, one anchor, a large and expensive landing net, and several marker buoys.  I am sure there are several other things I don't remember. Surprisingly, I have never lost anything over the side while freshwater fishing, but I am sure it is just a matter of time.

Several rods and reels, Sony cell phone, good cast anchor, sunglasses.  BTW there is a service on Lake Lanier where for a donation a diver will come and get whatever you had go over the side.  I recently learned this or I would have used them for my favorite worm rod a few years ago.

Rod/reel and a scale

I had my scale in one hand and a bass in the other, went to throw the fish back but threw the scale in instead. 🫢

A friend of mine (honest) had his iPhone fall out of his shirt pocket never to be seen again. Bought a new phone and went fishing the following weekend and did the same thing again. 🫣 Expensive fortnight.

Tether everything possible in a kayak! Learned the hard way one night, thinking I could get away with it. I was casting my spinning combo and then switched to another rod but didn’t secure the spinning combo when I put it away. When I went to reach for it again, it was gone. I could only assume that the rod I previously pulled out somehow caught it and flung it overboard. Combo had a Stella 4K on it, $900 bucks for the reel alone. Still stings!

St. Croix Mojobass rod with Shimano Curado K reel got overboarded by a wind gust. Fished it with no luck. Back next week with gopro and a rake, no luck. Back next week for diving with a snorkel and mask, got it. Detail strip of the reel, everything good to go. Got lucky, ONLY because guy on his dock alerted me the rod went over and because the incident was in very shallow water in a cove. Very grateful to Dave on Mousam Lake 🍺

Watched prescription glasses fall off my head at the boat launch. Almost caught them. Almost.

Watched Yeti lid drop over the edge of the kayak and sink into the shallow murky abyss. Bye bye.

Brand new SLX DC and Dobyns Fury. Literally bought it on the way to the river. Spooled it at my truck, loaded the kayak. Ran under some limbs, next thing you know, there it went. I know exactly where it is/was still. It was only about 6’ of water, but it was like 50 degree water…. Was too much of a wussy to go in and get it. Haven’t fished there since out of sadness…

My Leatherman got tangled in the anchor rope and what seemed like slow motion I hollered with my arms stretched forward, diving to save my friend of 5 years from a watery grave . Too late . He slipped below the surface without a sound , descending out of my sight within seconds. My heart broke as I thought of all those times my trusty SuperTool was unjustly used as a hammer or a prybar , saving me a trip to the pickup truck.  He should have retired and spent the rest of his days comfortably resting in the bottom of my sock drawer , but no. We had a hats off moment of silence and said nice words about him and that was a good story, huh?

That is rough. I haven't lost anything overboard... but granted I don't spend a lot of on a boat. However, of the few times I ran my boat, I almost lost my Leatherman PST original overboard. I have since procured a nice pair of $1 needle nose pliers to use for such occasions. Leatherman will stay safely in my pocket unless it's an absolute must.

I’m a slow learner. I had to lose one off the boat and two on the dock ( although one of those was retrieved by my second rod) before I bought a 6$ pair of fishing pliers at Wally Martinez. They are pretty handy. The line cutters are sharp and the handles don’t flex when twisting a hook out. I still carry the Super Tool though, just in case.

Yeah I'm trying hard to not carry mine on the water at all. I have a Gerber I use but prefer to just use my fishing pliers with built in line cutters which are tethered to the boat.

havent lost anything important yet. A few times though I'll "retie" and put a new plastic on the hook and toss it overboard but forget I never actually retied.

I do remember when I was younger my sister threw over a little mini mouse zebco rod on her cast. Well a year later my dad and I were fishing the same spot and I hooked into what I thought was a tree branch. Up comes mini mouse! My dad was actually super excited about that one! He cleaned it up and I believe still has it somewhere in his barn.
