Returning to structure once found on electronics
Correct you can do that multiple times around the lake and return to those exact long/lat numbers you made way points. Be careful you create trails so you don’t try to return in a straight line. Tom

Returning to structure once found on electronics
The topic is returning to a way point. Relying on GPS map way point is only as accurate as the map data. Selecting a map way point is independent of metering a way point with sonar. You can select a map way point with a cursor you marking a longitude / Latitude numbers independent of your actual location. Tom

Returning to structure once found on electronics
That isn’t what I am saying. Flashers used horizontal lines to display sonar signal returns. Your digital sonar screen displays a history of the same sonar returns interpreted by the processor. The key word is “history” the only real time sonar returns are displayed on a narrow vertical bar (flasher) located on the far right side of the sonar display before being processed. Your boat is moving forward the sonar signals sent out and returned by the transducer. Because your boat is moving forward everything within the transducer signal has been passed by it’s in your wake behind you. By the time you see the signal displayed and react to what you see the boat is traveling further away behind the boats transducer. You mark the spot where the GPS is currently located but the structure element or fish is further back in your wake depending how fast the boat is moving. Tom

Braid to leader to straight mono or fluro
It comes down to your perspective how line comes off of a spinning reel spool. Looking at slow motion the line comes off in coils like a stretched spring not loops. Loop would be a twisted coil and wouldn’t go through a guide. Braid shouldn’t dig down into a spinning reel spool if the overlay pitch is wide enough. Bait casters need a faster level wind worm gear to overlay small diameter braid or it will dig down into itself. Every spinning reel wraps line onto a fixed spool by the rotating bail and if the end of the line can’t rotate with each wrap a twist is created. Braid also gets twisted going onto the spinning reel spool. Braid being yarn doesn’t show up twisted until it’s twisted tight enough to create looped knots we call wind knots that nothing related to wind. We can agree to disagree but nylon mono has higher knot strength then same dia FC line. Why use a header line with lower knot strength? Tom

Returning to structure once found on electronics
I will give this 1 more try. Driving your boat at slow speed and your sonar screen displays the hypothetical billboard what you see displayed is in your rear view mirror behind you when you mark a way point. Tom

Returning to structure once found on electronics
What you all are missing is the way point is where the boat was but the structure element is behind the boat when you mark the boats position. Ifyou put down the TM and find the structure then mark your way point while on top of the structure or fish. Tom

Returning to structure once found on electronics
Back in the day when we only had flashers and marker buoys we learned the actual structural element was behind the boat where the transducer has pasted over it. We tossed a marker buoy behind the boat to mark the spot. Flasher were actually faster displaying the structure because no delay displaying it. When you see the structure element it’s at least a boat length behind you. Turn the boat around and make a second way point the true location is between the 2 way points of structure or fish. Tom

If you don't fish tournaments, why do you fish for bass?
I fished tournaments because I fished for bass. You enter a tournament be it bass or any sport because you want to compete and test your skills against others. Not everyone is a competitor but I am and always was, it’s in my genes. I fished Tuna, Marlin tournaments and fresh water bass tournaments in the same year. World Record Bass was my goal most of my life because I wanted to catch the biggest bass not because of fame or fortune but because I thought it could be done. Tom

Help Identifying Bear Hair Jigs "Foo Trollaid"
Foo meaning intentionally meaningless led me to answer the post was a troll. Apparently there maybe some meaning? Polar bear hair was very popular before the bear was put on the endangered species list. Polar bear hair is illegal today. Tom

If you don't fish tournaments, why do you fish for bass?
Bass fishing for sport goes way back before tournaments. Read Dr Henshall book on black Bass it’s written in the late 1800’s. Bass can be caught by a kid using worms with a cane pole or a pro with $100,000 worth of tackle, plus they located nearly everywhere. Tom

East wind
Normal weather conditions the air mass moved west to east across the country. High and low pressure fronts that create high winds move west to east. Abnormal weather like hurricanes move differently with unpredictable wind direction rotating counter clockwise. Where I live and fish normal winds are light westerly or wind from the west is best. Easterly winds are generated by fronts forcing wind down though our mountain canyons where our reservoirs are located. We call these winds Santa Ann’s the have sustained wind over 35 mph and up 70 mph…. wind from the east is least! Tom

Sentimental rods/reels?
I kept my sons 1st rod made for him at age 5 and his 2nd rod he used from 8 until he passed from cancel. I don’t have anyone to pass down these rods to, no grand children. Collecting dust so might as well gift them to BR member who has young kids interested in fishing. The 1st rod is Tennessee handle spinning ultra light 47” long. I had a Zebco Omega Trigger spin reel on this rod. The 2nd is a 80’s vintage Phenix Split Shot rod 6’ spinning with Tennessee handle and had a Stradic 1000 spinning on. Interested in both PM email for photos, cost the price of shipping. Tom

Do you carry multiple rods for the same tehcnique?
When I had my boat carried duplicates sometimes 3 of the same rod/reel combo’s. Now with only 5 combo’s they all do multiple presentations. Tom

High Speed Reels
Having bass fished with early reels 3:1 gear ratio, “high speed” 60’s Ambassadors 4.3:1 ratio and 90’s 6.3:1 ratio the speed wasn’t a factor because the spool dia and width were larger. In 2000’s the bait casting reel became smaller frame, lighter weight and smaller diameter and narrower spool. To off set the lower IPT gear ratio’s increased to 8:1 to be close to 6.3:1 anglers were use to. I have no problem fishing 100 size reels with 8:1 ratio slowly with jigs and worms. Always use reels equal to today’s 300 size reels for crankbaits and faster moving lures with 5.8:1 to 6.3:1, the IPT doesn’t drop off radically like 100 size reels. Tom

South east Vacation/retirement locations
California is 80 % rural and 20% high population cities. The reason people are leaving or don’t want to be in business is 100% insane taxes, regulations and expensive cost of living. Retired with fixed income that you afford to live in California it’s hard to find better climate and both fresh and salt water fishing. Yes I am a native raised at Big Bear lake when it was very rural, well water and fuel oil heating, no fencing low density population. I went to a school house it was that rural! Not suggesting anyone move to California unless you have the income to live here. Central and northern CA is still mostly rural farm land away from cities. Good luck with your search and enjoy retirement👍 Tom

High Speed Reels
Measure the IPT after making a long cast over 30 yards. Simple make a mark using a Sharpie on the line at the rod top, turn the reel handle 1 full rotation and make a second mark on the line at the rod tip. The inches between the 2 marks = IPT regardless of the reel gear ratio. Tom PS, 100 size reel w: 8:1 IPT after casting 30+ yards approx 18”-20”.
