What size/gauge hooks do you recommend for 2.75” paddle tails on an A Rig?
You don’t need a jig with nose hook eye using A-rig clips. You just need a 2/0 short hook. Tom

Peak bassing?
Peak fishing would have been in my 50’s when the local trophy bass lakes were peaking and I was healthy. Making annual trips to fish off shore Marlin and tuna in Baja down to Cabo. Casitas and Castiac were producing giant bass. My in-laws had their Lake of the Woods home for musky fishing. All my fishing buddies were alive along with my family, life was good! Now in my 80’s everything has changed, enjoy life while you can. Tom

Why Cloudy Days Are Better Than Clear Days....?
Cloudy rainy days occur about 2 months out of 12 in SoCal but they occur during pre spawn seasonal period prime time for big bass. Lower light, falling barometer and lighter boat traffic when it’s cloudy with light rain. Storms are another story unsafe to fish in high wind and heavy rain. For catching numbers of bass sunny days, Catching numbers of big bass cloudy w/light rain. Tom

Zebco 33 Love?
Zero Hour Bomb Company or Zebco started making reels around 1956. I am not a fan of spin cast closed face reels. Millions of anglers started fishing using Zebco reel My late son started with a mini Omega trigger Zebco reel. Zebco bought my 1st reel co Langley followed by Quantum. The original Zebco 33 is different over each generation. Tom

New to fishing, San Diego
Probably start a new thread in the boat forum. Pontoon boats with a canopy are nearly impossible for 2 anglers to cast effectively from. Consider renting a pontoon for family outing. IMO it’s easier to wear your sun protection; light weight SPF long sleeve shirt, SPF pants, wide brim hat, light weight fishing gloves with open palm and fingers etc. Hard to mix family outing boat and bass fishing. Suggest a trip to Anglers Marine to discuss options from knowledgeable bass anglers. San Vicente is a different lake with the dam rebuilt. Kayak fishing is very popular in San Diego. Tom

How important do you find sensitivity in your rod for bottom contact baits etc.
You will all kinds of recommendations stating the higher the price the better the feedback sensitivity. The OP is using his index finger to feel line movements, no rod has better sensitivity. The overall rod/reel balance, light weight along with high rod material modulus come into play. The rods guide train components and placement to reduce line drag and enhance casting are a big factor. Todays reel seats with opened blank contact helps. You can get all you need for under $300 for a good bottom contact rod today. Customer service and warranty are important. The only factor that counts is how the feels to you! Tom

Reel nut not gripping. Suggestions?
ND Vibratite tape is ideal for reel lock rings, compatible with composite materials. Loctite 242 may not be compatible with composites as it uses keystone solvents. Tom

New to fishing, San Diego
Welcome to BR from fellow SoCal angler. BR has a western bass fishing forum for local content. San Diego salt water fishing is world class and the local bass lakes are good. My warning is our lakes have Florida strain LMB that behave differently then Northern strain most BR members and bass fishing articles are written about. Suggest you and your buddy hire a local guide and fish San Vicente lake. Keep in mind colder water bass fishing gets tough. Welcome, Tom

If you bass fished as a kid, what was it like?
I can’t explain why big fish became my goal. My mentor was Jason Lucas who emphasized developing fishing skills like casting accuracy’s and working lures to catch bass. I would walk the shoreline and see pressure wakes from bigger fish leaving and smaller bass staying curious to see me. I wanted to catch those bigger bass all my life. So watched them closely and focused on catching them. Being at the right place and time was a result of a lifetime trying to catch the biggest bass in the lake. Have no idea why this became a goal but it did! Always judged fishing success by size not numbers. Tom

If you bass fished as a kid, what was it like?
Live on a lake shore and fished about the same time as I could walk a life time of fishing. Bass about 7 years old when catching my 1st, the bass hooked me into a lifetime of pursuing them. Tom
