Beavers and bass: The eternal debate
Beavers create fish habitats by building dams, falling shoreline trees and building lodges. Fish and beavers have coexisted long before the real predator showed up….man. Tom

Really hating this Trilene XL 4lb test
Maxima Ultra Green 5 lb .008 D same as 4 lb Trilene XL but a lot stronger knot and abrasion strength then 6 lb XL. Don’t understand the knot tying problem suggest trying improved clinch knot or Palomar knot. Uni knot is simple to tie. If you can’t see .008D line get 2X reader glasses! You may be twisting the line spooling it? Tom

Baitcaster already damaged
Defiantly user damage not a Daiwa issue. Better have a discussion with whomever has access to your tackle. Tom

Any other musky fisherman?
My introduction to musky fishing was traveling to meet my fiancés parents in 1972 at Lake of the Woods, Ontario Canada. Before that trip never seen a Walleye, Pike or Musky, only pictures. Being from SoCal the northern fish were unknown to me. I knew the lore of making 10,000 casts to catch a musky so didn’t plan on catching one. The neighbor was a musky guide and taught me how to use musky lures and where they liked to hang out, invaluable lessons. I hunted musky like big bass and caught several If I lived in musky country they are the top predator to target. Back then a 40 lb musky was the 50” today. I look back and think if I had my swimbaits tackle then. Tom

Fishing pressure
During the circus million dollar award for a world record bass in the late 80’s to mid 90’s our local trophy bass lake were insane. Same time period the opposite was fishing with my in-laws in Lake of the Woods area fly in lakes rarely ran across another boat zero pressure. Endured circus rat race and relaxed during the quite remote wilderness, Call of the loons is far better then bass boat noise. Tom

Fishing alone
I preferred to fish alone in rainy weather in the pre spawn period back in the day when I had a boat. Always fished night tournaments with my son mis fishing with Tommy. Out lived all my fishing partners and no boat now so if I go fishing it’s as a back seater. Don’t pass up a chance to go fishing with your kids, make it a priority, Tom

Before anyone buys lithium batteries please read Cobalt Red by Siddharth Kara. All lithium batteries cells are made in china, domestic lithium batteries only make battery cases for lithium cells. Good technology that belongs made back where it was developed Here! Tom

Impact of scent on bass
You become a believer when your fishing partner is kicking your butt using the same worm and you put the scent he is using and start catching bass. I don’t agree with Dr Jones on everything but it’s hard to argue with Berkeley’s success! Tom This stuff will ruin your olfactory sense for days… everything smells like Smelly Jelly. I had a plastic jar break in the boat locker oh my🤬 Tom

Curly tail and Ribbon tail worms
Start with Tackle Warehouse>baits> soft biaits>worms> ribbon tails. More choices than anyone could use. Not a big ribbon tail user but do use Berkley 7 1/2” & 10” Power worms and Double Z 10” Bull worm, it’s a floater for night fishing. Tom

Impact of scent on bass
Dr Kieth Jones Berkley fishing scent specialist has written several books and articles regarding Black Bass ability to detect scent. Suggest looking up Dr Jones and reading his technical info in lieu of endless opinion between anglers. my opinion it helps when it helps and I use scents not as an attractor but to cover negative odors Tom

Fishing and chemotherapy
Prayers 🙏🏻 Rodney as everyone has suggested consult your Dr and I am sure you have. Chemo depresses your ability to withstand direct sunlight so be very careful. Having gone through Cancer with my son I suggest doing what you can with caution My wife has WM Waldensytrom Macroglobulinemia rare blood cancer and can basically do her normal activities without over doing it, rest helps recharge your body. I believe you also need to recharge your well being so if you feel like fishing go for hour instead of several hours. Bless you and your family we are always here with support. Tom

How does seaguar invizx compare to tatsu?
Reel set is when you detect a strike reeling the line tight fast while lowering the rod to load it then a firm rod sweep. Tom

What's Your Favorite Season for Catching Bass
No doubt pre spawn is my favorite seasonal period to bass fish. The weather is unstable and difficult to locate the big females staged but the reward is catching a bass of your lifetime. Fall where I fish can be really tough if the lakes turnover and they do killing 2 weeks of fishing. Summer is the most productive seasonal period for numbers of bass plus we have a few night events that always fun to fish. Winter can be good but our bass tend to go deeper then I like to catch them but you can put some good numbers in boat if they are above 30’. Tom

Strike King Tungsten Compact Casting Jigs Question
The only knot that may work well is the San Diego Jam. Other knot must clinch tight around the hook eye without creating an opening. The SD J knot slides down itself and clinches tight onto itself. Tom

Should I use a leader with braid?
Braid with a leader = 2 knots to fail. The the 1st time I used braid was on my off shore 2 speed big game reel to increase the line capacity to 600 yds with 100 yard to shot. The braid was 65 lb Fins PRC recommended by friend with 50 lb Soft Steel Mono. Worked great. I had about 200 yds extra and used straight braid to fish the Delta and Clear lake weed beds frogging and it worked great. Now that I am a backwater I am experimenting using 10 lb Fins Spin5 braid with 7 lb Sniper FC on a spinning combo to reduce line twist, so far so good. I still use straight 5 lb max UG for slip shot rig and fly lining live Shad. Tom PS, when I had my boat managing line twist was easy.
