Braid vs Mono on a baitcaster re backlashes?
Hitting something on the back stroke blows up any baitcasting reel regardless of the line. For fresh water bass no reason anyone needs line stronger then 30 lb test. The reason anglers use 50lb, to 80lb test braid is the larger diameter is easier to handle without cutting your fingers and behaved better on a casting reel. Going smaller diameter braid requires special level wind gear and shallower lighter spools to reduce casting issues and small diameter line digging into the spooled line. Disagree all you want. Tom

Is live bait skillless?
Just about every bass angler started out using a live worm under a bobber, little skill needed. What usually happens is the entry level angler witnessed a bass being caught on a lure and change to lure fishing. Some anglers don’t change and develop thier live bait techniques to higher skill level. Other bass anglers use both live bait and lures using higher level skill sets for both. Tom

Braid vs Mono on a baitcaster re backlashes?
The answer is no braid is lighter weight and much smaller in diameter then mono, copoly or FC lines making harder to cast on standard size bass bait casting reels. When you get a backlash with braid it goes deep into the spool. You mitigate deep braid backlash by pulling about 75 yards of line and tape over it with Teflon plumbers tape the wind the line back on your reel. Tom

Bass
If you have handled Crawdads you know their pincher claws can hurt. Crawdads use these claws for defense when a predator comes close and juvenile bass are not big enough yet to defeat the crawdad. Tom

Thermocline questions...
Thermoclines are not a fix stationary element and vary by the hour from current and wind. Think of thermocline as a change in water temperature that varies from 2’ to 6’ thick. The DO levels below a thermocline isn’t a void as several fish species live in the colder water zone. Tom

Northern vs Southern Resevoirs CA
We tend to divid California into 3 regions; Northern, Central and Southern. The population density of both Northern and Central is about 1/2 of Southern California. Southern California is arid Mediterranean climate with little water source and high population living along the coastal area. 50% of SoCal is desert and mountains the balance is basically a city. SoCal bass fishing is located in reservoirs open to the public all highly pressured from recreational use and fishing. Central Cal is more rural with farming and is surrounded by High Sierra and Coastal mountains with more water supply then SoCal and larger reservoirs. Northern Cal Includes the San Jauqine Delta over 1,500 miles of shore area to bass fish, Clear Lake a the largest natural lake in the State, serveral major rivers and large reservoirs with good bass fishing and lower recreational and fishing pressure. NorCal is rural with both farming and surrounded by mountains High Sierras and coastal. The San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento make up the majority of the population density. Tom

How does finesse fishing work good?
We western bass anglers think of finesse fisherman who pioneered the use of light line presentations a name comes to mind who introduced “neon” to hand poured Smitty worms as a high school kid John “Zank” Zankowsi. Zank used moth wing powder for the blue neon color in soft plastics. Zank later started his own worm company and became a top stick in local tournaments. As I recall SoCal finesse started in the late 70’s early 80’s. Ironically the same time period the big FLMB started to show up along with big trout imitator swimbaits. Tom

Electronic Winches
I used a 20’ rope attach to the wench strap about 3’ pulled out and draped the rope rope over the guide rail, use the TM to get enough momentum, pull it up about 20’ from the trailer and glide on as for as you can. Pick up the rope pulling the boat onto the trailer. Now you only need to wench the boat the rest of the way. The trick fishing alone is getting out to use the wench. I added a trailer step to do this if no dock was available. Tom

Texas rig question.
Texas “style” weedless hooked soft plastics can be used any time a soft plastic is fished. I used Texas hooked works for soft plastics for Brass’n Glass rigged Texas, drop shot, split-slip shot, Carolina rigged, Florida rig*. To me it’s import the hook eye is about 1/16 inside the soft plastic nose no further and rigged straight. I use straight shank worm hooks when Texas rigging w/sliding bullet weight and prefer glass faceted bead between the weight (brass ‘n glass) and hook eye. Tom * pegged bullet weight.

Need opinions on light inshore baitcaster
Fresh water bass reels in salt water can work if the materials are comparable to salt water. Bearings need to be sealed type, no magnesium, line capacity sufficient the line diameter being used and drag system that doesn’t over heat under strong fish long runs. I would look at coastal reels designed for this purpose. Tom

Favorite colors from each soft plastic maker
Soft plastics vary lake to lake and lighting conditions. Injection molded soft plastics are different from hand pours. I use very few over the counter colored soft plastics. Yamamoto is one exception and use 221, 301 and 330. Where I fish Shad colors are preferred; smoke with black and fine silver, gold flakes with blue or purple neon. Cinnamon w/ fine red flakes and neon blue or purple. Tom
