  1. I'm thinking the Cetina's are going to be replacing the Trion's. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Purist fade away too. Three reels between $80 and $100 seems to be overkill. Then again, it could be just a case of BPS streamlining what they sell, and they are choosing not to sell so many reels in a price range that competes with their house brand reels.
  2. Wow, new baitcasters, new spincasters, and new spinning reels. They finally came out with the Supreme 25 size I've been dreaming of. Looks like I'll have a slightly used President spinning reel for sale soon.
  3. When I started to look for new spinning reels last spring, I had just about every brand, at one store or another, give me fits. When I finally decided on a Stradic, I took it home and found it to have bail issues right out of the box. I took it back and ended up getting a pair of Supremes from another store. Not long after that I picked up a third. I have not a problem with any of them. While I have not put that many hours on 2 of the three, I have not found any dirt issues with the one I have put many hours on. Not saying it's not an issue, it might be for some, depending on the conditions they fish in, but I have not found it to be a problem. I do keep mine in cases for storage and transportation, so that might have something to do with it. If I were to take a guess, I would say it's a case of leaving the reels in an uncovered boat while traveling down dusty roads. Wasn't my reel, so I can only guess.
  4. The SJR721 rod I got reduced to $150, from Sportsmans warehouse, is $229 in the BPS catalog. The retail sticker on it reads $210. Some of the prices are going up more than $15. Maybe that is really why the Sol and Fuego is/was discounted too? A future price hike??? Then again maybe they are just not going to sell them anymore. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the real story is as it unfolds.
  5. Wow, all I got was 2 new Fuego reels. I'll have to try and expand my list for next year.
  6. IMO, the Avid's are a little more bulky than the IMX's. The GLX's are a step up from that, how much of a step, is a matter of opinion. When getting into the $150+ price range, IMO, a lot comes down to how much your willing to spend, and what feels good to you. I wouldn't go out and sell off your Avid for an IMX, but it might be worth it to save a few extra coins and buy an IMX for your next rod "upgrade".
  7. I have 1 President and 3 Supreme, Pflueger spinning reels. IMO, the Presidents are top of the line Graphite reels. They are probably the best value in graphite chassis reels on the market. With that said, I would rather spend the $$$ on the Supremes. The President's, Supreme's, Medalist's, Sahara's, Sedona's, Stradic's, Symetre's, ect... are in a very competative price point. There will alway's be trade off's choosing one brand over the other, but in the end, the value is close among the major brands, and even some of the lesser known brands.
  8. When I got my lefty Sol, I had called the store first in order to confirm they stocked and sold the reel. When I got there, all they had on display were right hand cranking Sol's and Fuego's for 179. I was surprised when I went to check out and they were cheaper than the display's. I had misread the receipt and thought it said 155, but later I found it said 159. Last week I went down to the cities and seen they had a S-W there. That's when I saw both the left and right Sol on display. The righty was 179 and the lefty was 159.
  9. Spinning combo's will balance better, and "feel" lighter. Larger baitcasting reels will feel heavy. Unless you looking for longer rods, over 7 ft, you'll want to start out getting lighter reels, sub 8.5 oz. I have bad wrists, and I notice the balance and feel of the reel much more than the rod.
  10. All 4 stores I have been in, or contacted, have righty's for 179.95 and lefty's for 159.95 both models.
  11. It's strictly Sportsmans warehouse. As far as I know, only Sportsmans warehouse is dropping the Sol and Fuego. They are only 2 years old, not likely Daiwa has any plans to drop them anytime soon. They don't have any other reel in that price point, with those features. They have lower and higher cost ones, but nothing that light weight. I hear S-W does a lot of price cutting to lower inventory on slower moving items. The Sol and Fuego might not move enough for them. I notice they tend to have the more popular items. They don't have the Chronarch MG 50/51, that is one item that comes to mind.
  12. I got another story after contacting various Sportsmans warehouses. It seems they are discontinuing the sale of Daiwa Sol and Fuego baitcasting reels. The low price they have on them is a "until they are gone" price. I ended up having to get 2 Fuegos shipped to me from way down in Kansas. Only three stores in their chain had them left in stock when I bought mine. I was told that store inventory was being replentished, but I went with buying now incase there was a change in that story. BTW, I wanted left side cranking, that's why they were so low on them, the stores had right hand cranking reels. Better get 'em while they are at this price. 30% off quality left hand cranking reels is a pretty rare find.
  13. I'll throw out a few suggestions. Under $50....Lightning rod. Under $100....Cabela's rods. $150ish....St. Croix Avid $200ish+ Loomis IMX or GLX. The above is going by MSRP, there are ALWAY'S deals out there on any given brand of rod...if you know where to look. If you search around on the site, you'll find quite a bit of info on good rods in any given price range. Shimano, Allstar, and Falcon are a few others that come up as having at least some rods in their line up being good values.
  14. I feel for you if you were able to one up what you have.....with a Shimano. ;D
  15. I really like my Sol, and don't see myself getting anything but Daiwa baitcasters in the near future. I have a Pixy and a couple Fuegos on my list, if I can still get the Fuegos on sale. The two Sportsmans warehouses I went to wereout of lefthanded Fuego's. If I can't get them, I'll be getting JDM's most likely. I would think the Tierra would be a good reel. It has the Magforce-Z brake system. It also has the good drag system too. About the only real difference I can see between the Tierra and the Fuego is the weight. The Fuego retails much higher too.
  16. That is the EXACT setup I am going to make. I've had the 721 for awhile. I have a spincast reel on it for pan/crappie fishing right now, but I'm going to get a Pixy for it now that I have my SJR721.
  17. Mg is what lawn boy mower decks were, still are? made of. Tough stuff. I wouldn't worry about the reliability of the material, the deciding factor of quality, will be the design and construction of the reel.
  18. Bullfrog Zara spook. Bluegill and/or baby bass shad rap. Lipless rattle bait. Black Cavitron buzzbait. Mann's baby minus 1 bone and/or grey ghost color. Husky jerk in silver and/or gold. Jitterbug yellow and/or frog and/or perch and/or black. Rebel Pop-R plus silver/black and/or Bass and/or shad.
  19. Individual store sales will vary. But they will all honor the internet sale price, even when the in-store sale is over. You have to go to the customer service counter and ask for the internet sale price and they will give you a voucher to take to the cash register. Cabela's does the same thing. They'll look it up right behind the reel counter and remark it for you so you can go straight to the register.
  20. It's actually surprising how soft the tip is. I bought it to try using large cranks and topwaters with it. I only got out once with it in the boat, and a couple times from shore. It seemed to work ok for heavily weighted SwimSenko's and large deep diving cranks, but I never did get any bites with the deep diving cranks. The jury is still out on using it for cranks. So far I really like it for throwing the 7/8 oz topwater lures like spooks. I have some large spinners that I'm going to try with it in the spring, I think it should work well for those too. Those double blade spinners are heavy. I'll most likely try some heavy jigs with it too.
  21. Falcon original series? Shimano Clarus? All star Instinct? Cabela's tourney trail IM7? BPS Extreme? Just a few I found, maybe someone has some input on them? I got a couple Cabela's rods for the kids and they hold up well. The Cabela's TT IM7 get's my vote.
  22. Yoy never say what model you were looking at. The big difference between them is the XF action of the BCR 803. This is what make it ideal for smaller jigs and worms. One of my favorite. I'm looking at both the BCR803 and 804 in Mossyback... the GLX is out of my budget since Santa is buying himself a new Curado 101 as well. Don't forget to look at the IMX MBR rods too. Maybe the 843? They are a little more, but they are really nice all around rods, that would work well for larger jigs, IMO. If you have a Sportsmans warehouse nearby, they have/had the MBR785's on sale for $150. That's where I got mine. I scored two IMX 783 SJR's for $120 last month. I've actually never seen a 785...interesting. I did own a weible reel seated 784, and regret selling it. It felt like a 783...maybe because the weible reel seat and heavy steel locking ring put the balance point closer to the reel seat. I was set on taking RW up on his suggetion of getting an MBR844, but when I saw the price of the 785, I couldn't pass it up. I ended up getting a SJR721 for $120 at the same time. I alway's wanted one for panfishing. It was a good day at the store. The bait monkey was proud of me that day. ;D I went back a few weeks later and they were out of a few rods, including the 721's. They did still have the CR723 and the MBR785 marked down.
  23. Should have looked closer at them, I'm not a Shimano guy, but I see the extra $100 value in the Core. The better gears and the better drag alone are almost worth the $100. Add in the fact you don't have to fully remove the side plate, the bearings are shielded, and it has a better one way roller bearing. If I was a Shimano guy, and had the coin for that much reel, I would get it over the Chronarch mg.

  25. Well, if that is all you are going to be using it for, then the 3 would work well. Just remember to cover everything when figuring lure weight. A 1/2 oz jig head, with a big plastic creature bait, might put you over 5/8 oz. Not saying the 3 wouldn't work for it, but setting up jigs and the likes, isn't as straight forward as throwing on spinners and small cranks.
