  1. 4 1/2 inch shell white live pointers are on sale at Cabela's for $17. I am only able to order shell white, so that might be all that is left. I'm not actually buying one, but I wanted to see what ones were availible.
  2. Hmm......I am going to be fishing the tidal Potomac this spring which can be brackish in parts. Will that hurt the Supreme? I would go with a graphite framed reel then. President, Symetre, Stradic, ect... You could even use an aluminum reel, like the Medalist, if you want.
  3. Choose the lb test braid you want to use. Here is how I spool up braid: I take my trusty clip on line counter and spool on 360 ft (120yds) of braid. That's just my amount, you can put on as much, or little as you want. I then take and tie on my backing mono (I use 12lb XT). I finish filling the reel. I then tie the Mono to an empty spool, and transfer the line onto an empty spool. As I am puting the Mono portion of the line onto the empty spool, I use my trust line counter to measure the mono. Now I know how much backing to use with the braid. As long as I don't forget that magic number, I should only have to do that once with each size spool. If I change line diameters, I will have to redo the process, but for the most part, the backing should be able to remain on the spool for years, only having to replace the braid as needed/desired. Mono capacity is an old way of measuring spool capacity. Though it is still used today, it has no bearing on braid, floro, or reel strength, IMO.
  4. Casting or spinning??? How heavy are the jigs rigged up??? Short rod for accuracy or longer rod for distance??? Price range??? Mono, Floro, or Braid???
  5. "Going to BPS--Must Haves?" Someone between the Baitmonkey and your wallet??? ;D Well, what do you need/want??? No doubt, I wouldn't pass by anything that is marked down, that I use, and/or could use a spare of, or more of. Lot's of BPS brand rods on sale, online. Some new Original Culprit 10" Baby eel colored worms 8-) Giant stuffed pillow Bass are on sale too. ;D
  6. my mistake, sorry. Go to the home page. At the very top it say's Store locations events. Click on that, pick a store close to you, then the info will come up when you go to that stores page. Some stores have the classic listed already, some don't. The IA store does not, but the NC store does. The next week date I saw was for the IA store's boat show.
  7. Yeah, I know about the thread your talking about. Right after I read it, I did a search and found BPS didn't have the info on the site yet, just a banner saying the event was coming. Later on, I found more info on the site. I think it was under news and events or something. I think the reel trade in portion of the event is coming up early next week, but don't quote me on that. The closest BPS, I found out, is about 350 miles away, so I don't plan on attending.
  8. Well, up until a couple day's ago, I was using a Fiberglass rod, but since that there fancy new modern Loomis crankbait rod came in the Fed-Ex truck, I'm hoping that will be my favorite 1/2oz lipless crankbait rod. I have a couple smaller ones, but I usually just throw them with my spinning rod. If I like the Loomis crankbait rod enough, somewhere, a long way's down the road, I might toss around the idea of thinking about, considering the possibility of, getting a lighter one too.....maybe. ;D
  9. I know EXACTLY how you feel. The same thing happend to me, but it was a Stradic, and it was a bail issue. Cabela's is just shy of 100 miles for me, I think. I forget the exact miles, but it's more than an hour and a half drive. 95% interstate too.
  10. That there is a mighty fine deal....good job. 8-)
  11. I agree 100%. I have the 07 model Supertuned and the new HSTA is noticeably smoother and all around better. Heckuva deal for $160. The Magforce-Z braking system in it really helps to seal the deal. I think Daiwa has a new brake system coming out. I heard mention of one, and that would explain why the Magforce V and Z systems are being installed in the lower price point reels.
  12. Throw what's working...I like the Mann's brand baits for the wide wobble. Ghost white I think is the color. I'm sure there are others, but that is all I have.
  13. I tend to use a glove with "gripper's" molded into the palm most of the time. 2 reasons: 1) We have Bullheads up here, getting stung by them SUCKS!!!!! 2) Handling fish with your bare hands is not the best thing for the fish. Otherwise, Cabela's sells some nice net's. I do have a nice Frabil net with a rubber coated nylon net. The handle slides up into the net and makes it fairly compact. Cabela's offers one that goes a step further. The handle slides up into the net area, then the frame folds in half. Nice net, but I didn't care to spend the $70 or $80 for it. Stowmaster is the brand, Bass/Walleye-72", 20" x 24" hoop (10" x 34" stowed) is the specs on the one I would have got. The also have nice travel bags for them, for when they are folded up. Here is the link...if it works. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat20186&id=0022997016581a&navCount=2&podId=0022997&parentId=cat20186&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20186&hasJS=true Bungee cording a net into a rod holder will keep it in the boat while under power. I have an upright rod holder for keeping unused, but might be needed rods, that could double as a net holder.
  14. Well, the one I wanted to pick is not up there, so I went with the Daiwa-X. I think one of the best baitcaster values out there right now, if you want a larger bait caster, is the TD-A153HSTA. It's a lot of reel for $160 IMO. Weight isn't bad either.
  15. Larger diameter mono equals less volume of line on said spool. Less volume of line equals less weight. Less weight around the spool equals faster spool startup. Faster spool start up gives you a farther cast. Braided line will work the same way, but on a much smaller scale. Braided line is smaller, therefore it will pack on the spool tighter. Tighter packed line equals more volume. More volume equals more weight. You have to get into the 30-40lb plus braid to get the same effects as the 10-15lb test mono. Line memory and/or line limpness have much more effect on casting distance than the spool start up speeds from the line weight. Braid will cast farther than a lot of mono's and floro's becouse of the limpness of it.
  16. Yeah, if you notice, Pflueger rates their reel spool capacity's odd too. They only give the lightest line capacity, as if that is the only line you can put on. I would look at it this way, 6-8lb line-8030, 10-12lb line-8035, 14-17lb line-8040. My SJR783 should really have a 8035 on it, but I only use 8lb mono on the rod, and 10-12lb braid, so it works just fine. You should go to a store and check them out in hand. Feel them, put them on a rod as close to what you have as you can get, or bring your rod in. I prefer the smaller reels myself, but I have noticed that a very high percentage of people tend to get the 35 Presidents and Supremes.
  17. The number of bearings is definitely overrated. I had two calais 200s with 11 bearings and I sold them both. I replaced them with 50Mgs (I now have 4 - 50Mgs). The Mgs are at least as smooth as the Calais and way lighter. Okuma makes a baitcaster with 11 bearings, but I don't think I will trade my Shimanos in just yet. Ronnie Hey, you cut up my sentence to make it say what you wanted. You must be a political reporter by day. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Really, a decent reel can get by with just spool bearings. It's nice to have the basic 7 bearings though. Over time the worth of the bearings will show, IMO. I've had enough bushing reels to see what happens to them after a few years of use. No doubt the extra bearings, that are usually handle bearings are very debateable. I'm still trying to decide their worth myself.
  18. It looks like it reads that the deep south is near constant, and up by the M/D line, there is more of a seasonal flare to the fishing stores. That's interesting.
  19. Well, I have 2 17 foot cane poles for pan fishing, I guess bearings are over rated. ;D Just trying to breathe some life into the forum, it's been quiet the last couple weeks.
  20. I have the 8030's. They are slightly smaller than the 2500's. If Shimano made 1500's and 2000's also, then I would say it would be equal to a 2000. I use 8lb mono on mine with out any issue at all. Unless you plan on puting it on a rod rated for more than 3/4oz and plan on using more than 10lb mono, the 8030, IMO, will work just fine. These are in between size reels, they don't even compare to the President spinning reels either. As far as comparing them to the Shimano's, well, that's an opinion thing. IMO, the "value" is much better with the Supreme.
  21. Yup, it's a back and forth debate. Zillions are equal in price to the Curado's and Chronach's, but they weigh a lot more. Calais are way more. The Sol vs. Chronarch mg and Curado 100 tend to be a wash, though the mg is light for the price. The 2 less bearings on the Shimano's is concerning too. I can see between 6 and 8, but between 4 and 6 screams "bushings in key area's". Like the worm....
  22. Shiawa's are good reels. ;D I chose Diawa over Shimano baitcasters for 2 reasons only. 1) Ease of adjusting the brake. While I understand that the brake is not adjusted often, it's nice to be able to just turn the dial. 2) It was claimed that the Diawa braking system was a bit better on the $150-$250 reels vs. comparable Shimano's. Well, weight did factor in some, cost per oz was much less with the Diawa's when I found them on sale. MSRP put's the Diawa's just a little lower in cost.
  23. I've alway's taken my shallow runners and added small split shot's to the line to get a little more depth from them, but I saw an article that mentioned Carolina rigging floaters. My question to those who have done this is...what is the hookset like on a treble lure, with a slightly slack line??? Should the lures be switched over to single barbed hooks???
  24. Don't forget the gun deer opener. LOL, oh yeah, I only do some wing hunting, so I tend to not think of Deer opener. I guess that would be tied with 'Eye opener.
  25. This was the St. Cloud store. I was in the Coon Rapids store too, becouse I was down in the cities (I went to Thorne Bros. too). 8-) I didn't even notice the sale when I was in the CR store, I was looking at low cost 'Eye trolling rods. I did notice they still had right hand Sol's and Fuego's for $179 and LH Sol's for $159. No lefthand Fuego's. It's a good thing I got mine shipped up from KS when I did.
