  1. Oh yeah, you just reminded me, that I left out of my reveiw, how much better the anti-reverse is compared to some other Japanese reels on the market.
  2. Reels I pay close attention to the reel the first time out. If anything seems the least bit wrong, I stop using it until I can find out the problem. I don't check over the grease and oil of a new reel before using it. I don't do anything to cork handles until I have them "broke in" a little.
  3. BPS Bionics Plus baitcasting reel. It's a good reel for $50, but don't think your getting a reel that compares to the big boy's. Berkley Lightning rods. Best sub $100 (MSRP) rods on the market IMO. Zebco platinum series spincast reels. If properly maintained and kept lubed, they are very nice reels. Pflueger President spinning reels. Pretty good reel.
  4. Yeah, if 1/4 oz is the most you plan on using it for, I would consider it a little too much. The 781 casting rod, or the 782 spinning rod would fit better. So, I would opt for the 782 rod. I use mine for 1/4 to 1/2 oz set up's with 8 lb mono. IMO, the 2500 is a little much for the rod too. Take a look at the Pflueger Supreme 8030.
  5. I've seen references to hop up parts for reels, and I see R-R did up a couple of his reels recently. I was wondering where are good sources for these parts. I don't need fancy "bling" parts, just real good functioning parts. Specifically, if you read my TD-Sol review, you'll know I'm in the market for a new handle for it. TIA.
  6. Duolock's for some hooks, Norman speedclips (taking off the split ring) for lures. That's all I have ever used.
  7. I have the SJR 783 IMX rod with a Pflueger Supreme 8030 reel. Awesome setup. 8-)
  8. I recently aquired a TD Sol. First impressions: It's small. I was thinking it was going to end up on my CR 721 rod becouse it was so small. I liked the compact feel of the reel. I liked the fact it felt like my old Bantam reel in regards to the handle not sticking out far, which doesn't make the reel feel tippy like the BPS Bionic I got, or a lot of the other reels I checked out at the store. The balance on my MBR 785C rod is outstanding. It felt like I forgot to put the reel on. First outing: I spooled the reel with Yo-Zuri hybid, 12lb rated, clear line. I tested it on my MBR 785C IMX rod. I first tested the setup with 2 cranks, a Rapala Husky jerk, and a Rapala deep down Husky jerk. First cast I forgot to set the cast control to the lure, and made a minor mess. I then corrected the mishap and proceeded to fish. The reel is awesome. No backlash, no need to feather the spool with your thumb. Casting distance was good. The cast control/braking system is easy to use, and small changes make a difference. I then set up a SwimSenko with a bullit weight. Again casting was easy to dial in and no backlash issues. Pro's: Good weight and balance. Casting and braking are top notch. Smooooooth. Nice compact size. Dead on anti-backlash system. I had no issues with the smaller spool, but I could see it might be a problem for long term use where you are cutting a lot of damaged line off in a day or weekend of use. The drag is nice and smooth too. Con's: The handle, IMO, is a cheesy POS. It's a handle I would expect to find on a reel that came in a bubble package hanging on a hook for $30. Really disappointed in the handle. I would liked to have seen it come with a metal Ti coated line guide. I'm not sure I want to spool up braid on this reel.
  9. 11 gallons of gas, many hours on the trolling motor. 9 gallons of gas in the truck. I live in a county with 72 lakes, atleast 14 of them are considered "prime" lakes. ;D
  10. Your both full of it. Santa Claus makes them in his little workshop.
  11. 1) Are you right or left handed? 2) Do you have the cranks of your spinning rods on the right side, or left side? 3) Do you cast and fight fish with your right or left hand? The most important thing is getting the correct type of set up. Go to a store and play with both right and left handled combo's. Know which one is more natural for you. After you have determined that, then you will know more about what will work for you. Your not really going to get much for quality with a $100 combo, but you should be able to pick up something that will last a few years. I have a $50 BPS reel. It feels like a $50 reel. It would work well as a starter reel though. I would look at the BPS Extreme combo on sale, and the Bionic blade w/Bionic plus reel. Also, you don't have to be tied down to a combo either. Finding seperate reels and rods on sale will also give you a good value too. For example, you could get a BPS Bionic plus reel for $50, a BPS tourney special rod or a Berkley Lightning rod or a Quantum KVD rod or an Ugly stick lite. You could get a BPS Extreme reel, and a Berkley Lightning rod. IMO, that would be a great $100 set up.
  12. Well, for under $100 you can get the Loomis blank of your choice, then ReelMech can put on the EXACT handle and guides you desire. Best of both worlds. ;D
  13. 72/12 = 6' 78/12 = 6'6" 84/12 = 7'
  14. That's just the way it is using a leader on braid. Think of braid as a dull knife, with enough pressure, it will cut. You might see a little more strength out of a braid to mono knot, but in the end, the result will still be the same. It will break at the linking knot first. If you were trying to boat a 5lb fish and the knot was breaking, then that would be cause for concern, but breaking the line to free it, it would be normal for the linking knot to break.
  15. I don't know the answer to that. You could start a poll and find out what the percentage of users are, on this forum. I would venture to guess it would be close to 50/50, but that is just a guess.
  16. Well, my BSR 803 GLX has boated the most fish, and is the one I try to use first, but, if I was forced to choose just one rod to keep, it would be my SJR783-IMX spinning rod. My favorite general fishing rod that could handle most of the lures I throw, if it was required to.
  17. 1) If you want to. Florocarbon is also very good in the area of abrasion resistance. I use braid with a floro leader. 2) Pflueger Supremes in either the 30 or 35 size, depending on your preference. 3) Don't know, I almost alway's use a leader with braid. 4) Suffix seems to be a favorite, I like Stren and Spiderwire, with a slight perference for Spiderwire in the junk, and Stren for casting distance and accuracy. I will be trying Suffix next spring.
  18. Worms/plastics and light jigs I use a Loomis BSR 803 GLX spinning rod MH power extra fast action. For heavier jigs, I have both a Loomis SJR 783 IMX MH power fast action spinning rod, and a Walleye series rod MH with fast action spinning rod, that I mostly use for vertical jigging for 'Eye's. A good medium spinning or baitcasting rod would work well for what you are looking into. I'm a big fan of extra fast action rods when it comes to jigs and single hooks, but fast actions work well too.
  19. I have the 10X sg reel. I think I got mine around 1982? Pretty good reel. I used it a lot back then.
  20. My local GM and SW put them on clearance weeks ago. The GM even had a special display for them.
  21. Here is my take on what is going on. Fuji makes thousands and thousands of reel seats each year. Becouse they are graphite and not metal, it's a little more difficult to hold a tight tolerance. So as the parts are being assembled, some will not fit as tight as most of them. One of my Loomis rods tends to have the seat loosen up too. Never to the point of making any noise, but sometimes after using it for awhile, I will check it and find it a little loose. I will be getting it taken care of in the off season. All my reels are Mg or aluminum accept for my light spinning reel for pan fishing.
  22. 5:1 to 6.5:1 is a good range for most applications. Upper 20's to low 30's for the inches per crank revolution. The higher the numerical ratio, the easier it is to control the lures speed (to a point).
  23. If you have a Sportsmans warehouse near by, they have or maybe had, the Daiwa Sol and Fuego on sale. Darn good value at the sale price they had on them. They had others, like the Pflueger President, on sale too. Otherwise, pick out a couple reels, and ask specific questions about them. It's not likely the thread is going to turn into much as is. Most of the guy's have debated who's the best so much their fingers hurt from all the typing.
  24. Waters density is highest at 39F. Water is as heavy as it's going to get at that temp. Anything colder or warmer will be lighter water. Were talking regular lake water here, not heavy water as in the heavy water used in BWR and PWR nuclear reactors. Anyway's, as the tempature increases or decreases from 39F, objects become less buoyant. To answer your question on how much does the water temp effect fall rates. It does on such a small scale, it would take some pretty high tech equipment to measure the difference. A given lure will work the same in 40F as it does in 80F water. At least to the point any human or fish can see.
