What to get the wives?
Good deal, best of luck. On a side note, I usually buy one gift for myself, something small and wrap it for her. She opens it gets that P'd off look and I just start cracking up laughing and then pull out her real gifts. By the way those of you with kids do you guys exchange gifts Xmas eve or on xmas day. My wife and I usually do in Xmas eve so we can give the kids full attention on the day. This year my wife wants a camper of our own for the vacations to the lake. Small price to pay for something I too enjoy ( and want )

GULP???
I have been using gulp saltwater for 3 years, what I have noticed is that, yes they catch fish. You can catch fish all day on them, but I can tie on a mirro lure or a saltwater bass assasin and catch 1 fish that weighs about the same as all the fish I caught on the gulp. The scent is so strong I guess the trash fish will fight over it. ;D

Pendulum Cast
We use a pendulum cast from the piers here on the coast with a king mackerel rig. I have a 12ft Tica, with a penn squidder reel. We use about 17-20# test and a 6-8 oz anchor weight.

The Dark Meat
Russ, The way I understand it is that meat is the muscle fibers of the fish. It generall breaks down and isn't as bad after cooking, but it contains the most colagen which is why it is the strongest area of odor and taste of the fish. Here you go I got this off the web. "Certain fish species, such as salmon, catfish and tilapia, have a pronounced dark muscle running down along the sides. Due to lipid oxidation, the dark muscle in particular, is known to cause a rancid taste and smell in fish that has been stored fresh or frozen. "

Still Learning
I can say from experience ( fishing near the mouths of inlets to the ocean ) a lot of the hold depends on the type of anchor you get i.e. using a fluke style anchor over a mushroom helps because it digs in. You will still sway a bit, but your boat won't drag it. Over time you will also learn to position yourself for the angle you want to fish at. Hope this helps some.

Which people taught you to fish
My dad started me out fishing when I was about 3. He took me surf fishing at the OBX and helped me reel in a 5# flounder. After that he would take me to my aunts pond with a cork n worms. My best friend had a pond on his parents property and we did odd jobs around the houses to get some money for a small jon boat and oars. We caught a lot of crappy and bream and couple of bass accidently hit our hooks from time to time. When we got old enough to drive we spent the summers on the pier fishing for king macks down on the coast. When I joined the Marine Corps it was over for me because I was 10 min from the intercoastal waterway and became an avid flounder and sea trout fisherman. Got in good with a lot of the old timer locals and they showed me how to truly fish for them. This past spring I got what I call burnt out on saltwater and decided to go for bass. Most everything I have learned has come from this site. I don't often have a lot of luck, but its my goal this year to become a somewhat decent bass fisherman. Hopefully it will come easier with time spent out there.

Need some recommendations
I have gotten the go ahead from the wife to treat myself to any reel that I want. I have narrowed it down to a Calais DC, or a Steez. I have used a lot of Shimano gear in the past, saltwater and most recently fresh. I am not too familiar with Diawa gear. I know the Steez is supposed to be much lighter of a reel. I am basically looking for feedback from those who own them. Pro/Con for each. Thanks

American Ingenuity? RANT
I have learned most of everything I know on my own. My dad would try and get me to do stuff, but if I didn't do exactly to a t the way he wanted it done, then he would get frustrated and just take over. I have talked to him about it and he said he now realizes that he should have been more patient with me. He has gotten to the point now where he can stand back and watch but he still ciritcizes the was I do some things.

covering a flat bottom jon.
I am looking to a solution to covering my boat when, I am not using it. I have a 16ft flat bottom jon. In the past I have used tarps and tried to have some kind of beams in the boat so the water would run out. I have had a problem with the weight of the water being too much and its a real pain to get the tarp out. The only part that is flush or higher than the rails is the steering console. I usually just suck up the time and clean it out good, but I plan to mod it this winter and try and make it more like a bass boat and I don't want to put all the time and money in it, just to have it ruined. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and taken to heart.

HELP: Fly rod wt recommendation - 5/6 or 7/8 wt?
I got my first fly combo this past summer and caught my first bass on my first trip to the lake with it. I went with the 5/6 wt with a floating line I can throw poppers for bass and panfish with ease. Its a blast.

A Year Off
I would say to do what you want, but be able to live with it. Just realize that sometimes taking time off of school makes it 2x harder to get back. Good luck no matter which path you take.

interesting facts!
Interesting facts: If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. (Hardly seems worth it.) If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb. (Now that's more like it!) The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!) A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes. (In my next life, I want to be a pig.) A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy.) (I'm still not over the pig.) Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories a hour (Don't try this at home, maybe at work) The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off. ("Honey, I'm home. What the....?!") The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field. (30 minutes..lucky pig! Can you imagine?) The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. (What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond? ) Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity) Butterflies taste with their feet. (Something I always wanted to know.) The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue. (not going there) Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?) Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. (okay, so that would be a good thing) A cat's urine glows under a black light. (I wonder who was paid to figure that out?) An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. ( I know some people like that.) Starfish have no brains (I know some people like that too.) Polar bears are left-handed. (If they switch, they'll live a lot longer) Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (What about that pig??)

Avid hangs one
Avid, Did the bass try to eat the lure, or did the lure try and eat the bass. ;D Not only is the weather and fishing good year round in Fl, but you guys can buy lures that fish catch. Just not fair.

switching baits out on braid?
skunked. I was thinking of trying the speed clips, but I have had quite a few people tell me that they have had problems with them. How have they help up for you.

Use your head
LBH, Good heads up, I will also add that if you have a CG station in your area; file a float plan with them. We do this every trip out for the giants. Makes it a lot easier if god forbid you need them.

Fishing charters
Best advice I think you could get. Not real familar with bass charters, but living on the coast and getting to know a lot of guys who run charters. I will say this, you have guys who do it full and part time and have a passion for it, they are all about customer satisfaction ( knowing that somedays the fish just don't want to cooperate) they try to teach you and if you want let you do a lot on your own for the learning experience. Then you have the guys who bought a boat, took the course and have a charter business and just don't care about anything but the money they get. Look in to it and get some references.
