^^ True. My go to bait is a 3" white curly-tail on a 1/8 oz. hot pink jig head. I've caught everything from Stripers to Crappie with it, including my PB Walleye.

agreed. My fishing partner fishes this a lot. Versatile bait and the price is right. Lose one of these and you are out what, 50 cents?

I would say the Rapala Weedless Spoon.  This lure was discontinued a while ago and I find it to be one of the best lures to use on top of the slop.

Was going through my tackle stash today and found several baggies of Mr. Means in both 3" and 4" size. Caught a lot of bass on these back in the 80's, great grub lure. Supposed to imitate a leech I think.Thanks for the reminder. May give 'em a try again on Wednesday.

I too use a curly tailed grub but I pair it with a 1/4 ounce roadrunner head. I use both white and chartruese heads and grubs.  Great bait.

don't know about underrated everywhere, but around here I am the only person I have seen for the last couple years throwing a jitterbug. I catch fish on it almost every day i go fishing, usually 2-4 fish. I have not seen another angler throwing a jitterbug. I have even had a few comment on my throwing it as they go trolling by; things like, " wow, I haven't seen anyone use a jitterbug for along time" I just smile and wave.

Mann's Chug 'N Spit. I've caught quite a few good fish on these. Even had a big catfish hit it once, scared the crap outta me when it hit .

Especially for use after dark, the black J-bug is probably Numero Uno among all surface lures.

I've fished with and still own most of the lures mentioned, (nice to hear their names again) and would like to add 2 crankbait mfrs. that some of you will remember. Crankbait Corporation's "fingerling series (3/8 to 1.5 oz. deepdivers), and Lazy Ike"s "natural series". Both were made in hard foam and had no rattles. Unfortunately, 1 of about every 3 needed tuning.

Agreed, at least where I am from the first lure someone tells you to put on for topwater is a jitterbug. That bait has been around FOREVER and I don't think it will ever stop catching fish and selling. Definitely not an underrated lure around here, but hey, I don't do much fishing out of state.
