Winter Baits?

Featured Replies

i know most people say the only thing you can catch em on in the winter is a jig n pig, but is there anything else that does alright? i was thinking shakey head.

Shakey head, spinnerbait, dropshot, carolina rig, jerkbait, crankbait, wacky worm, float n fly, swimbait, spoon, blades. I'm sure there are others but these are the ones I use.

Swimbaits and jigs are all you really NEED all year long.

I rarely reference anything published in Bassmaster magazine due to the articles are nothing more than product promotions. However the Dec 2012 has an article with Mark Davis on winter crank baits that is a must read. Mark Davis doesn't over promote tackle and focuses on the details that are important and you can apply to other lures.

Because planted rainbow trout are a prime food source during the winter where I fish swimbaits are always a lure I use. jigs are my favorite lure year around and winter is a good time to jig fish because crayfish are another prey the bass are keying on. We also have threadfin shad so the shad crankbaits are a good choice, however I prefer using structure spoons when I locate bass feeding on shad schools. If nothing else works the drop shot or slip shot finesse worms can save the day, if I want to just catch a few bass on light tackle.

My day is usually spent casting swimbaits and jigs because winter is a good time to catch big bass.

It helps to know the kind of water youre fishing.

fishing mostly golf course style ponds, nothing big enough for anything more than a trolling motor. water is clear for 2-3 ft for the most part.

Jerkbaits, shakyheads, rattlebaits, jigs, and swimbaits are about all I use Dec-Feb.

The lowly BeetleSpin works well for me in cold shallow water,

You have to make your own 1/4 ounce Beetle Spins with components because the large ones are no longer made. These lures are deadly in the hands of eight year olds,Skilled anglers can mop up with them but most wont be caught dead throwing one.LOL .Not me, Im not too proud to utilize them.
