Deal Or No Deal?

Featured Replies

Was at my local tackle shop looking at a few things. Noticed some lures on the wall that were in a plastic box with megabass vision 110 on them(not their normal box). Looked at the price, 15$...... Scratched my head then asked the one I the sales reps about them. He said he orders the 110 blanks, custom paints them, and adds owner/mustad hooks. I grabbed two.....should I return and clear the store or am I getting what I paid for?

I don't know if I would return them just yet. If it were me I would fish a few first and see how the run. Do they suspend and cast well? Does the bait have the propped action you want? Are the hooks good and can they handle bigger fish? Will the finish hold up or will it deteriorate after a few fish. If the bait fishes well and the finish is good I would say it may be worth buying said knockoff bait. If there are quality or performance issues I would not buy any more going forward.

For the same $15 per bait you can buy the LC pointer. It has many color and size options as well. I fish both and seem to have slightly more sucess on the pointers particularly the 78 size.

The guy does other custom paint jobs on various rapalas and lucky crafts.

I'd probably fish with the ones you got before you go buy more of them. If he's buying the blanks and painting them then he should be able to get plenty more of them so there really shouldn't be any rush for you to go buy more.

Sometimes the home made baits work just as well.  I would give them a try.

What he is doing is not right marketing wise, those "blanks" he is buying are not from Megabass, they don't have the same internal weight, they are knockoffs, he could get in big trouble for selling them as a mega bass product, I am not saying they are not worth the $15 or won't fish well but he can not market them as a mega bass product. Just to cover his butt I would tell him to change the name on the box, if a rep for whatever wholesaler comes in and sees this and they carry Mega Bass products, they will let Mega Bass no about the pirated baits.

If you are going to spend the 15. why not get the real thing for your money......You could always get a LC Pointer for that price.

Let me get this straight.  They're supposed to be genuine Megabass baits, that he hand paints, and resells for 40% less than retail?  Sumthin' ain't right here.

  • Author

He said he orders the blanks directly from megabass, which would be cheaper than the 29.50 retail on their site.

Nothing wrong with building lures from other companies components if the were rightfully obtained. But the moment he attempts to sell it as "megabass vision 110" that is blatant copyright infringement. Not only is it CRI, its an inferior product. He definitly needs to take the megabass name off and creat his own name for it. I would tell him that also.

I agree with others. Fish the lures. See how they do. They may be great, they may be garbage. Only a water test will tell. If they arent good, take them back and buy some pointers or another quality jerkbait.

True.

What for? You knew it was a knock off when you bought it. You stated that the owner explained to you what it was. Sounds like you were informed of what you were buying.
