Swim Jig Question

What is your go to color pattern and trailer?  I always find myself going with a sexy shad color with a twin tail grub trailer in either white or blue.

I make my own but the best pattern by a mile so far this season has been what I call "green gill" , the head is made using steel blue with watermelon on the top and the skirt colors are molting craw living image and a simple watermelon with blue flake.

Roadwarrior,

That has me intrigued.  Can youe explain how you are rigging the shellcracker on the jig?  I'm not familiar with what you described.  Do you have it where the shellcracker is swimming vertically or laying flat?

Thanks

I use the Dirty Jig  in shad colors, Ala Bream, and Ayu colors.  For trailers I use the Optimun Double Diamond, Roboworm Shad, Keitech or Big hammer.

I use the 1/2oz or 3/4oz size jigs.

Blue Gill colors for me as most waters I fish don't have a strong shad population. Even at that though, shad colors always produce.  NorthStar flip n swim jig is nice in new Gill and Salsa.  I'm awaiting my first Siebert Outdoors swim jigs in a blue gill pattern (unsure of the actual name). They look really good though.

Holding the Shellcracker vertically, pierce the nose and run the jig point through about 1/4" down.

Scrunch the nose up the jig as far as you can. Turn the hook to come up through the bottom and

out the spine. If you have judged the distance properly the hook will lay flat and parallel to the bait.

How do you guys work your swim jigs? I'm very new to jigs in general.

Do you guys just retrieve like a crankbait?

Also, what does the bite feel like?

steady retrieve for me, and trust me when they hit it it's like a freight train you cant miss it

I haven't found a way that doesn't work yet. Slow roll with a bob here and there of the tip, dragging the bottom the whole way in, burning it just under the surface, jumping it off the bottom or just like a shaky head.

The bite is a vicious one. That's why I love jigs so much.

with Northstar flip and swim, is the jighead too wide to rip through heavy cover such as milfoil?  Even with a streamlined head on my revenge jig, i will ocassionally snag milfoil (but can rip through it).

It will come thru it, just not as easy as the original swim jig though. I prefer the original.

Thanks guys for giving me some more confidence with the bait. Looking forward to my first bass on it! :)

I haven't used the originals to compare it too, but I really don't have any trouble ripping it threw any grass. It's rounded pretty good.
