Suspended Bass

Featured Replies

How do you guys approach suspended Bass? For example, the other day I went and it was pre-frontal, perfect conditions weather wise. But, I marked a lot of fish suspended. I think it was due to the lake being dropped hard for winter pool. Do you approach all suspended fish the same?

Wacky senko, and suspending jerk baits. I don't like fishing for suspending fish. But sometimes I have to.

I look for baitfish near the suspended larger fish, then I look for structure elements that intersects the depth the bait and larger fish are suspended at. If the suspended fish are near structure, they are catchable with several presentations starting with structure spoons. If the suspended fish are around bait in deep water the A- rig is the 1st choice.

Thanks, what brand and size spoon do you recommend?

My favorite spoon was Megabait Luna jig in black shad and chartreuse shad, 3", 3/4 oz size , #2 Owner treble hook with white chicken feathers (Iovino). This spoon isn't available anymore from Megabait, however Luna Bait offers a similar spoon called Luna jig. The 3" Luna jig looks like the original, however is 1 oz.

Luhr-Jensen Crippled Herring and Cast Champ with the same feathered treble hook iare good choice, in chrome or chrome-chartreuse in 3/4 oz. Kastmaster in chrome w/ blue back or gold also works good in the 1/2 and 3/4 oz sizes.

I have always thought targeting suspended bass was a total waste of time

until I discovered The Rig a couple of years ago.

a-rig is my first choice on schooling fish, sometimes I have to get the first bite on a crank bait then pull out the a- rig

Alabama rig if I'm somewhere it's allowed. For the places it's not a suspending jerkbait, boot tail or curl tail grub are my go to baits.

All good suggestions.  If those suspended fish aren't around bait, be prepared for a slow day...or find other fish.

A-rig is the best for sure. You can drop shoty them too but it takes quite a bit of experience with the graph to really do that effectively.

Can someone PLEASE get Aaron Martens on this forum!!!!

True that lol. Play video games with the graph and the drop shot. Ive never had any success with the a rig. Havent thrown it enough either lol.

I go first with the Picasso Bait Ball Extreme. Throw a ton of baits at them. Work it at different depths and different colors. If they don't want that I go with a hard jerkbait. If they dont want that then you are in for a day. Jerkbait is normally the thing that nails them suspended dudes. Find out how they like it, and get one that works to their depth.

Anything that puts a bait in the water column has the potential to work. A senko is an obvious one, just takes a while to cover water. You can throw swimjigs, lipless cranks, regular cranks, spinnerbaits, just run it at the depth they are in. My first 2 choices are above though.

Lake Fork Tackle Flutter Spoon or Rink-A-Dink (tail spinner)!

Like others have mentioned A-Rig is my first...if Im fishing where its not allowed maybe a jrkbait or a DTXX series by Rapala
