When using a carolina rig does the lure suppose to float above the grass or weeds and if so what type of lure is recommended. Thanks

Yes and no, sometimes a slow pull on the rig to just bring the worm along the bottom. Other times, a floating worm helps the presentation.

 

I usually opt for Mojo rigging now, lighter C-rigs, if you will. I use baits that float, but will sink eventually. When I use a Senko, it'll drift to the bottom faster.

 

Try them out, see what works for you.

It will not float but it will sink much slower than the sinker depending on the weight of the hook. So the weight hitting the bottom gets the fish's attention and when it comes to investigate it finds a nice worm slowly falling. As you bring the weight up and through the grass the weight will penetrate the grass and the worm will rest on top only if the leader is long enough.

You can C-Rig any soft plastic. Lizards seem to be popular. I've caught em off brush hogs, Senkos, worms, tubes, etc. A square bill crank on the back of a c-rig has worked for me. BTW, a guide once told me that women almost always outfish men on a C-Rig because they are more patient and fish it slower.

I use CR to specifically work on slowing my presentation speed. Often, I'll alternate between either a chatter bait or Spinnerbait (and slow roll the SB) for the same purpose.

French Fry

I like to C-rig Zman baits so they float off the bottom. Of course if I'm fishing a C-rig then everything else has failed so I'm far from a C-rig expert. 

I also like to use a floating lizard or worm like Zman and the now impossible to find SK 3x Floating Lizards. With this presentation a subtle twitch of the rod tip has great action. I also use a Viento with the twitchin' bar for the C-rig because it keeps me slow and one quick press of the bar and the bait goes erratic. I prefer to use it around vegetation and submerged brush/logs.

I also like a french fry. I sometime use a Zman elastech floater (centipedz I think its called). I will use a weedless #2 circle hook (the Gammy ones) and nose hook it.

I feel like mono will help the lure float better, fc will keep the lure down better. I'll really drag just about anything but do far my favorite is a brush hog

Any soft plastic will work but the two best baits for me are a lizard or French fry.

 This past year I only Texas Rigged my plastic worms/lizards.  This coming (2014) spring/summer I want to try Carolina rigging.  But what is the standard way to fish it? Do you slowly reel the line in without moving the rod?  Do you lift the rod up, lower rod and reel in slack?  

I have caught more fish on C-rigged Zoom trick worms probably than all other baits I have fished on it combined. The way I fish it is simple, cast it out, let it sink, and either let the wind drift my boat along while it drags on the bottom, or I will drag it on the bottom with my rod if the wind is not blowing enough to get a good "drift" going.

If fishing grass I use the "Mojo rig" , a lighter weight that slightly penetrates grass and helps keep the worm on top of the grass. Great video on this set up on Utube by our very own Glenn. Check out all his vids they're very informative.

i enjoy slow drifting a CR in my kayak when there's a light wind. I choose baits according to the bottom. I'm partial to the elastec baits in grass, but I think for me it might be because I don't use CRs enough to use other baits and get the subtleties right. I remember reading about them many years ago in Doug Hannon's books as the "do-nothing" rig when the idea was relatively new for the general angler. So that's what I did
