Some Advice?

Recommended Posts

Alright fellas, I wanna hear your opinions on this matter....

Right now my position at work(salary)consist of 4-12hr days with 4 days off and about 2 months total outta the year I work overnight, same days and hours but overnight. In September my wife and I are expecting our first child and I have a opportunity to take another position with 4 on 4 off but with less hours, 10hr days on the weekdays and 8hrs on weekends, and no nights ever. Only downside is its a lil less pay. Now I know raising a kid is no cheap matter but on the same hand money isint everything and I would love to be there more for the baby and my wife. The new salary would still be sufficient enough to make a decent living but it would still be a cut.

What yinz think? Always seem to be some good wisdom around here....

The joy for me as a father, has been seeing my kids grow.  I can always make money.  Doing something extra. Get a second job. Buy anything I want.  Here is the kicker.  No matter how much you make, you can't buy time!  Time is more important to me.  It can't be bought.

God...Family...Fishing.

Time races by so fast and kids are so awesome. You will have opportunity's at work...you will not have opportunity's to see your kids do a lot of their first's if your working. Kids don't need ten of everything....they grow to fast. May God give you all health and happiness'.

I did a career in the service.  Being gone a lot while my son was growing up was part of the deal. I had no choice at the time.  Later in my career when I did have a choice, I was home more.  I realized that the time I missed could never be recovered.

Missing good times and tough times is less than desirable.  Your wife will appreciate you being there to help out.  Some how it always happens that as soon as I left - I was needed most.

Good Luck

A-Jay

Family comes before all else.

From someone who spends a ton of time away from home. Take the pay cut and enjoy your kids.

Pretty much unanimous... if you can still "live off" the new salary it's not even a contest. The extra toys and non-essentials you could buy with more money are nowhere near worth time with your young family. Plus if you're actively involved with the baby you're going to earn some serious husband points and have a much happier wife.

I'll add to the fray here and say go with family.  I am in the midst of going to school for a career change for two reasons, one is i am tired of the corporate world and have always wanted to teach so that is what i am doing (with a pretty substantial pay cut too) and 2 i wanted to be able to spend more time at home with my family, especially as he is growing up.  Who wouldn't want their son to be their fishing buddy all summer long :)  I know i sure do....

No brainer, if you can pay the bills and get more family time then go for it.

Good luck with whatever decision you do make as i know on paper the decisions are always easy but in reality they are more complex.

Take the money.

Just kidding, every morning I peek in on my 3 year old before I go to work, and every morning it's still a gut punch that I don't get to stay home with him.

Wow... I really appreciate the input guys. I essentially know what choice Im going to make, just nice to see that the majority would do the same. Like flyfisher said, on paper it seems easy, not so much in reality. With alot of changes happening in the next couple months its hard to prioritize and get everything straight so a lil reassurance goes along way in big decision making. With all walks of life here on the forum its a good way to get opinions from different perspectives. Once again thanks fellas and tight lines!

Good luck also on your future schooling/career. My wife is a teacher and absolutely loves it.

Not having any children by choice, I would choose family over money.

Remember.

Your child's birth will only happen once.

Family first. You can always do something later on for extra cash.

Take the money and get out of there while you still can. Lol. I kid. I think your already made the right decision in your head. I don't make alot of money, but I make enough to take care of my family. If I didn't have kids I would be able to live much more comfortably, but I'll take being broke with these girls over being alone with a pocket full of cash any day.
