How many of your change your treble hooks?

Featured Replies

How many of you change the treble hooks on your crankbaits right out of the package? I got the chance to listen to Rick Clunn Sunday and he said he that he always changes the trebles on his 1.5 or 2.5, not sure which one he was referring to, from size 1 to size 1/0.  I've heard about people changing their trebles and didn't know if this was something very important to due or not. Just want to hear your opinions!

Thanks,

Okie

Never change them unless there's something wrong with the original one's such as being rusted after extended use or bent hooks. I don't have enough money to buy a $6 lure and then $6 trebles to go on them. Of course you could by a LC and get good hooks already on them.

I usually keep them on a season or so. Gammy hooks are awsome ad rarely rust. Eventually, all the hooks get changed fro Gammy hooks. I will change the front hook on trap baits and put a larger one on as well. If you but from somplace like lurecraft, you can get better deals on hooks like pack of 25 for $14 versus pack of 6 for $5 at tackle shops. The only lures that don't get changed are lucky craft. They already come with quality hooks. Gammy's hold their sharpness as well so in the off-season, you don't have to do as much sharpening or replacing.

I usually change them unless it is a bait that comes with a premium hook already on it. I always change my hooks on rattletrap style baits to a bigger size and topwater baits also.

...to Mustad Triple Grips.

Always change my trebles on crankbaits, one size larger on belly hook and to Owner cutting points.  It seems to really make a difference in hookups.

I always replace the stock hooks for all hard baits right out of the package to a stronger hooks, Owner hooks ST41 2X. Unless I'm just fishing for trout and/or bonita fish.

Check them on your finger. If they are sticky sharp they're fine if not change them with some Gammas.

Only bait's I've ever changed hooks on right out of the package are Jitterbugs.  Usually change those to Owners, or Gammy's.

I use the original hooks until they get dull. then I'll change them out.

If the bait has quality hooks and I want that size I leave the stock hooks

If the hook is not razor sharp ( checking how "sticky" the are ) I change them.

If I want to change the bouyancy ( something I normally do with Shad Raps ) I change the stock hooks for the next size up.

If the hooks show the slightes amount of rust I change them

I change them most of the time, unless they come with good hooks.

I always use Gammy's---they are sticky!!!!

I change the treble hooks on lures that come with low quality hooks. Such as some Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps. A good quality lure, such as a $6 one will most likely come with hooks that you don't need to change.

Everything I've bought from Arbogast and Heddon gets changed before I use them with Gammys.

X2  :(

Gammys rock. Baits such as those need their hooks changed.

I often change the front hook to a bigger size.  Sometimes I use a red one on the front.

I fish a lot of lipless cranks and in the 5/8 to 1 oz size and the hooks they come with are usually small and chromed so I switch them out for one size larger owner trebles. If a bass breathes on it, I usually have them.

I don't change out the hooks, LCs are already good enough  :(

I'm like most others.  If the hooks are quality and sharp, I don't change them.  On everything from Strike King, for instance, I change out.  I change hooks, too, to vary buoyancy, as well.

i like bigger hooks on my cranks.

i also agree with the statement that VMC hooks are crap, and i really dislike the Sure-Set hooks.

#7 shad rap with Owners #4 hooks. i like it much better over the stock size.

What does everyone use to replace size 5 trebles on some of the LC baits (like Pointer 100s)?

Most times I'll upgrade to larger and red hooks there rare times I won't change.

Actually, Owner started marketing the #5 size hook.

I almost always change my out to red VMC short shank hooks. I've never had a problem with fish bending those hooks and they're really sharp and seem to stay that way for me. Gamakatsu and Owners are just too expensive for me, maybe if I was tourny fishing I'd be more concerned about it but not just fun fishing.

Rick Clunn Sunday and he said he that he always changes the trebles on his 1.5 or 2.5

Why would he design a bait then change the trebles out of the box?  If the design was wrong then why wouldn't he make that change?
