So I had one of my club members show me his new Cavitron Buzz Bait that he is apparently the only dog in town using, and he has to have his stinger hook on it.  I have been using them for a few years now.  I tried to explain to him that I have never had a short strike on a Cavitron, mainly because of the elongated hook.  He then looked at me like I grew an appendage out of my forehead and walked away saying something to the effect of his ten years in age on me.  So now I am curious, do any of you use a stinger on your Cavitrons?  RW, I know you're an aficionado, what say you?

I'm with you. That elongated hook is one of the main reasons why they are so effective. Cavitrons don't need stingers, IMO.  They seem to hook just about every fish that touches them.

I've never used a trailer hook on mine and don't think you need one. Bass usually don't have any problems  zeroing in on the noise.

These definitely do not need a stinger hook.  When a bass hits one of these they annihilate it.

I never had much luck with buzzbaits until last year, when I bought a couple Cavitrons based on recommendations I read on this site. Great bait.

I never used a trailer hook and I won't start this year because I had an excellent hookup percentage last year. The hook sits lower in the water because of the bent shaft design, so I didn't use a trailer hook.

I had the best results fishing it slowly, just enough to keep it on the surface and moving back to the boat.

Nothing beats a good topwater bite.

I guess I'm one of the few who always put a trailer hook on all my buzzbaits.

I remember a trip that I had with Glenn. I was on a late summer buzzbait bite. As we got started I asked him if he was going to put a trailer hook on and he looked at me like I had something growing out of my head. Not three casts later he missed a good fish. Then I handed him a trailer hook. A few minutes later I boated a nice 4lber who was hooked on the trailer. So yes I always have one on. It's good insurance.

Nope, I never have used them. A buzzbait is generally

most effective fished in, on or around heavy vegetation.

I catch plenty of gunk without a trailer.

The second thing is this: bass miss lures and peck

at some. That is not the case here, most strikes

are decisive. Let your rod load before setting the hook

and you're good to go.

On Cavitrons, I've never put on a trailer hook, mainly because I slow roll it that the fish are so set on hitting the bait, that it would not be necessary.  Now if I were to burn it back, then maybe I would add a stinger, since the bait would be moving alot faster.

I'm with Fluke and Sam. I don't see a situation where it can hurt, only ones where it will help.

What I will say is yes -the design intended was for the hooks to be placed further back on the head. What that does is extend the hook up  range and help eliminate the need for the trailer hook.If I can add a chain link of trailer hooks to it during a tournament -I would. In fact I have added 3 trailer hooks in  successions on baits fishing at night.   I am whacked and have my moments.

First night using the Cavitron, I lost 3 bass. Since then added a trailer hook and haven't lost one since.

Well, if the designer recommends it, then I guess it can't hurt.

Well, dang if Bobby didn't set me straight, but three trailers chained together!?  That's a little much.  Point taken though.  Looks like my little red stingers for my spinnerbaits is going on that Cavitron.

LOL - Other companies can make a blade sqweek but only I can make it sound like a chain rattleing. Thats a sound I bet they hadnt heard LOL.

I use Gamakatsu trailer hooks on my spinnerbaits in 3/0. What size for a buzzbait?

That 3/0 is a good size-i also match it with how much debris is in the water. if there is a lot of flaoting weeds etc. I will use a smaller one so it dosent foul as much.

I always use a trailer hook on buzzbaits, including Cavitrons,  and I fish some real slop. With buzzbaits it isn't that difficult to avoid fouling the stinger because the stinger is generally pointing upwards away from the slop in most cases.

The Cavitron buzz bait is one of the best on the market however adding a stinger hook never hurts. One short strike equals one lost fish which can cost you a tournament.

I have had better luck with Cavitron buzz baits since they started using Gamakatsu hooks and I use a stinger hook (3/0 Gamakatsu) about 50% of the time. I let the mood of the bass guide me on that one. Been using Cavitron's for decades they have a great product.
