Does Anyone Still Have Faith In Spoons?

Featured Replies

I bought some Johnson spoons awhile back and started using them and yeah I caught fish and its fun and all but it seems like there is always something that produces better than a spoon on any day. I'm not going to go out and act like I've mastered spoons because that would be a lie but I still can catch fish with them. Does anyone still like to use spoons a lot?

Yelp! Caught 7 Monday on a Gold Johnson Minnow with a charteuse skirt  ;)

As I've posted many times, the Johnson Silver Minnow still produces for me.

It's really aggravating. The lake eats spoons.

Dardevle five of diamonds. When you absolutely, positively have to catch every last Pike in the lake, accept no substitutes.

I also used to bust skunks with a 1/4 oz gold Kastmaster.

My 1st bass lure was a #3 Hawaiian Wiggler back in '53, learn how to cast a baitcasting reel using this spoon.

There some good surface-subsurface weedless spoons besides the Johnson Silver Minnow; Persuader Bass spoons and the redfish Red Ripper spoon are 2 that I use in the spring through summer periods.

Structure spoons are good whenever bass are feeding on shad, flutter spoons when the shad or baitfish are larger size.

Weedless spoons are fished like weedless frogs, over the top of mates and let them swim in open water pockets or along weed lines.

I haven't used a spoon except for cereal, and soup. Ok, once I did catch a rather nice pike on one. But that over 20years ago.

A Hawaiian Wiggler is an in-line spinnerbait!

The #3 is a weedless spoon with a rubber skirt, look it up.

I dont normally give away my secrets but. Spoon+uncle josh pork frog. Black/silver. Dont ask me why it works. Its a killer.

Spoons are one of the fishing tools that you do not leave the house with.

The vintage Arbogast Hawiian Wiggler #3 is a weedless spoon, looks like a Johnson Silver Minnow with a skirt.

i did a search and tom is dead on. there is a #3 hawaiian wiggler that is just a weedless spoon with a rubber skirt. the 300 series is a spoon type body with a sputter blade in front.

tom, it amazes me how you remember the actual model numbers of all those old lures. i did go dig through my old stuff and found my old one with the spoon body and sputter blade.

It's easy to remember your first lure, rod/ reel comb, Thank you.

Tom

I use tungsten spoons when I see bass in deep water.

Last year in one of the pits I fish the shad became very balled up and the bass were close behind, actually underneath.  The only bait that we could consistently catch fish with was a large kastmaster spoon.   A year ago we went to TX to fish Amistad, the wind got high so we went to the river (a little more protected) and proceeded to wear the white bass ( Sand Bass for you Okies) out with spoons.

I'm assuming you meant "don't leave the house without" haha I guess a lot of people do still love spoons! I like fishing them in winter deep maybe I just need to get better at it.

Bass no... I mean I could catch some but there is never a time where I feel I need to use a spoon. Too many other better options. Now if I wanna catch pike its a spoon!

I use spoons for panfish, but have yet to catch bass with them. I have a couple spoons that are my second go to when my inline spinners aren't working.

I wouldn't hit the lake without an assortment of jigging spoons in the boat, especially late fall through early spring and again during the heat of the summer. I like the white and silver War Eagles.

I'll throw the daredevil every once in awhile mostly outta habit from growing up. Still catches me fish. I do think there are better alternatives most of the time.

Ps. I've got a very old one that looks good on my key chain
