Hey guys I was wondering what gear ratio you like to use for a square bill? Thanks!

Because with a squarebill you want to speed up your retrieve just a little. The 5:4:1 is a great ratio for say a deep crank or a deep spinnerbait where you want to: a. reduce the amount of torque and fatigue on you or b. stay in the strike zone longer. Hope this helps!

I use a medium speed reel. Low gear ratios are for deeper cranks. When fishing a squarebill I want to go faster and you don't get as much drag from the lure because it isn't going as deep

I go with a 7.1: 1 there's no added resistance, so there's no need for a slower reel in my opinion. 

I use 6.4:1- only cause someone told me too... jk...  keeps me from reeling to fast ....

No need for slow speed unless you're bait pulls hard like 5XD, 6XD, little john dd, etc.. I would discourage against it for anything smaller from my experiance.

Either 6:4 or 6:3. As stated above by fish murderer, it helps me to not reel too fast. I suppose I could use something like a 7:1 or 3, but I know I would end up cranking it too fast.

Watched a video where the man himself Rick Clunn said he was taught by the father of the Big-O to reel that square bill fast, and when you hit something. *stop* pause then take off reeling again.

 

Clunn said that the guy was pretty old at the time saw Rick fishing it to slow and said "want me to show you how to fish that lure" and just tucked the reel down to his side and just started cranking away pretty fast, faster than i ever thought you would.

 

Agree on the general consensus 6:4:1 reel.

This is not always the case, there are days where the fish want a crank ripped by them as fast as you can get it. When you slow down, so does the bite. I love fishing cranks on the fast reaction crank bites

Think about the reels they were using back then, a 5.1:1 reel was considered high speed, there is a reason that they had to crank like heck. This thread needs to be discussed in terms of IPT and get away from gear ratio, it is meaningless in this conversation.

Yep.. Used to be 3.8.1 for me, I agree it is about IPT.. I use my rod to work the bait as well. I do agree with you..

I routinely use a 5.7:1 earlier in the year when the water temps a cooler and a 6.6:1 as the water warms and the fish are a more active. 

 

By utilizing the same retrieve speed, the different gear ratio's help to keep the lure's travel speed up or down as the conditions dictate.

I throw mine on a 705cb glass and a CI4+ HG 7.6:1. I can always reel slower.  So far its one of my favorite combos I own.
