Fishing Without Trailers

Featured Replies

Have you ever tried fishing something with a skirt on it (skirted jigs, spinnerbaits, etc) without a trailer?

Yes. Spinnerbaits if they aren't short striking I'll leave a trailer hook off if that's what you mean. If I want to create a larger profile I'll put on a soft plastic trailer on it. With spinners, its common to fish them without any trailers.

For jigs I have caught fish on them without a plastic trailer, but I usually like to throw one on to decrease the rate of fall. Also it gives it a bigger profile.

For chatterbaits I always throw on a soft plastic trailer.

Spinnerbaits, marabou or hair jigs, buzzbaits.

I fish spinnerbaits without a trailer more than with, I always have a trailer on my jigs.

I never use a trailer on a Spinnerbait but always use a trailer hook.

I don't normally use trailers on spinnerbaits or buzzbaits.  I do use skirts that have extended strands that act like a trailer though.  I always use trailers on jigs.

Try adding a #1 Colorado blade on a small swivel to the hook in lieu of a trailer, both jigs and spinnerbaits.

I am picturing that in my head, and that sounds like a great idea. I could see the bass keying in on that extra little bit of flash, which would have them aggressively hammering directly into the hook. Looking forward to trying this.

Same for me. Never a trailer on a buzzbait, rarely on a spinnerbait, always on a jig and bladed jig.

^ Same here.

Always on a spinnerbait and Buzzbait, I just haven't found a reason not to use a trailer.

I just started using a trailer hook on my buzzbaits this summer and I would say my hookup ration has almost doubled. I see no reason to ever take that trailer hook off my buzzbaits.

Where I fish trailer hooks on buzzbaits can be a pain...
