I have 2 questions about trailers.

1. When you say "pork" for a jig trailer, what exactly do you mean? Like actual bacon or ham?

2. Should I use a trailer on spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, and if so, what's best?

Pork as in actual pork chunks http://www.unclejosh.com/C/MEAT/208. Not ham or bacon, save those for eating.

 

Spinnerbaits you can use trailers like grubs, small swimbaits, etc, but it depends on what the fish want. If the shad the bass are feeding on are big, throw on a swimbait and give it a bigger profile. If they are swiping at it, you can throw on a trailer hook with no soft plastic trailer. For buzzbaits I generally dont fish with a soft plastic trailer, just a trailer hook if needed.

You already got the answer to the pork question, as for trailers on buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, well that depends but I very seldom use them but sometimes I will. I don't like trailers on spinnerbaits because I found over the years that they tend to elicit short strikes, the same with buzzbaits but if they are rolling on buzzbaits and you can't hook up, that is when I will put a trailer on, usually a grub or split tail trailer like the Rick Clunn trailers.

I never use a trailer on a buzzbait, very rarely on a spinnerbait, 100% of the time with a jig. I like pork trailers, especially when I'm targeting big fish, pork catches pigs

The good thing about pork trailers is that they will last all day, until you lose them.  The bad thing about them is that you have to keep them damp.  If pork dries out, it is worthless.

As far as trailers on buzzbaits - yes, I use a trailer.  Looks like this:

 

Always use a trailer hook on a spinner bait but never anything artificial.

I use the SK spinners that have a longer skirt section that cover's the main hook, but just barely the trailer hook.

Never use a trailer on buzz bait.

1. Pork is cured pork rind in salt solution to keep it soft. Uncle Josh may be the last company still making pork rind fishing lures used for bass fishing.

2. You can use either pork rind or soft plastics for jig or spinnerbait trailers.

With pork rind trailers the trailer is nose hooked about 1/4" back from the front or nose end. Pork must be kept wet while using it so it doesn't dry out, use a lure wrap with wet sponge when not fishing with the lure.

Spinnerbaits, I like to trim the excess skirt up some and add a trailer hook.  Grubs and stuff can help displace more water or give the bait a different look to the Bass.  Maybe add some bulk to it but I'm not a huge fan of them at the moment.

I use a trailer on my spinnerbaits 100% of the time. I don't seem to get near as many strikes when not using a trailer. I'll use a Zoom Split tail in pearl. I'll dye the tip of the split tails chartreuse if the water is dingy.

Buzzbaits: Yes, I like large curly grubs.

 

Spinnerbaits: No, Im just not a fan of the idea.  Besides the blades are more than sufficient for the presentation

 

 

But overall, trailer or no trailer, the fish will still get at them. 

I've read a lot that guys will take the skirt off the buzzbait and just use either a grub or a swimbait type on them.  Guess the skirt is too much?

No trailer on spinnerbaits or buzzbaits.

For those of you that want to use both a trailer and trailer hook... tie a bunny strip to the trailer hook shank extending about an inch beyond the bend.

Read an article about forrest wood cup and FLW tour and how popular using a buzzbait with plastic toad was. Added casting distance, lift, and bulk.

Suggestions for removing pork from hook after I forget to keep it wet?    Short of carrying an electric saw in the boat?

I can't seem to keep a buzzbait with a plastic toad anywhere near the surface. Sank like a rock every time I tried to rig one up.....

Which brand frog? Zoom seemed to be the main one used.
