What Rod For A Huge Crankbait?

Recommended Posts

What rod do you use for a huge Crankbait like a Strike King 8.0 Magnum SquareBill or a 10XD?

I've been using my Cumara umbrella rig rod for the 10XD. Does a great job.

When I first bought a 10XD, the only rod that I had that could handle the weight was a Rage 7'11" heavy mod-fast. It works well enough that I haven't considered shopping for perhaps a more optimum rod.

The 8.0 Squarebill is big but only 3/4 oz. Seems like it could be thrown on all sorts of MH Mod or Mod-Fast rods.

I use a flipping stick for the 8.0, never fished a 10XD.

Dobyns 805cb works well and is a very versitale rod, but the 806cb is perfect

Dobyns 806CB.... The 10XD is like dragging an anchor and needs that extra power...

Ive used my 805 on 10XDs and its fine, but the 806 made it less fatigue over the course of the day

That's what I would suggest as well, even though I don't have one (yet). Usually I just throw 3xds-6xds, but I was throwing my friend's 10xd with his phenix X10 (rated to 1 ounce) and it felt way overloaded. So I would suggest at least an 805, 806 perfect.

The Phenix X11 (7'0) is rated to 3oz but I use it for all cranks.

The X13 is 7'6.

I use the 13 Crankinstein for my 10XDs, just too hard to resist buying a cranking rod that has the same name as my username. The 806cb, Cashion 10xd rod, and the Halo deep cranking rod would all work great as well. I haven't gotten to fish the 8.0 yet but I'll probably start out with the crankinstein and see how that works. My other crankin rods are all 7ft as opposed to the 7'11 with the crankinstein. The 8.0 being 3/4oz would allow it to be fished on a lighter setup than the 10xd for sure though as mentioned above, I think a 7'4 or 7'6 cranking rod with a 1oz or 1 1/2oz rating would handle it perfectly.
