Kinami Go Out Of Business Or Merge With Pops?

Recommended Posts

We all know Kinami is/was owned by Gary Yamamotos son and the baits were pretty much identical except for a few colors and baits like the Nories Bug.  Did Kinami not do as well as Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits so they just stopped  making them?  I wanted to get a pack of Palm Trees a few months ago to try out, so I could spend a few bucks less than getting a pack of Fat Ikas, just to give them a try.  Couldnt find any Kinami at Bass Pro.  Went online and looked all over. Went on their facebook page and the newst post was from 2013 and the Kinami Baits website takes you to GYCB website.  When did they merge or just stop making the Kinami? How did I miss it?

I thought the Palm Trees and Psycodads were exclusive to Kinami and then later became GYCB products indicating some sort of shifting of Kinami baits over to GYCB.  The Kinami stuff has been taken off the shelves and sold to outlet stores like Overstock Baits ect.  If you're looking for cheap Palm Trees, Overstock Bait a& Tackle does a $1.99 sales once and a while and the Kinami baits are usually on sale.  They currently are selling the Kinami stuff for $3.99.

About last April they started being discontinued and out at TW BPS and other places. I snatched quite a few for $1.99 at OBT like TorqueConverter mentioned.  :respect-059:

Never cared for their baits and I am a die-hard GYCB fan. Not affected.

Well that just makes you ignorant, because they are the SAME EXACT thing.

The Kinami Flash in Junebug was one killer stickbait. Anyone got some they wanna part with? Any sources for them?

The two can not be the same....they have to have suttle differences in them otherwise copyright infringements.  And one you get 10 for $9 the other you get 5 for like $6.  So they are different but the same...but different.

The PsychoDad was originally a Kinami bait but is now a Yamamoto bait.  Which is part of the reason I see it being a merge of the two companies. As well as the fact that the link for the kinami website on their facebook page takes you to the Yamamoto page.  But yeah, they are/were different, but the same, but different.

Take a Kinami flash out of a bag and hold it next to a GYCB senko............they are the same bait right down to the "GYB" mark on the "egg sack". The only thing different in the Kinami line was the Norries Bug. Everything else was a Yamamoto product thrown into a Kinami bag. Kinami for a while did have a few exclusive colors that were not available on GYCB's. And to the idiot who thinks they are different because he has two different size grubs...................you do realize GYCB makes or made at one time several different types of single tail grubs. Fat ones, skinny ones, ones with a different tail profile....etc, etc, etc. The two grubs you compaired that are different proabably are different, but thats just because you didn't have the exact GYCB grub that was being put in the Kinami packaging. There is no "copyright" issues, Kinami was Gary's son's business...............allegedly............and the original intent of the Kinami brand was to put GYCB's in places like Wal-Mart, etc at a lower price point. But people ain't stupid. The cost per BAG was lower, but the cost per bait was HIGHER. They must have just said  "Screw it, the smoke and mirrors ain't working" because about the time Kinami baits vanished from our local Wal-Marts, the were replaced with GYCB products.

This has always been my understanding as well.

Hey some like to throw fuel on the fire......I was when I said they are different but the same but different.  Only difference really was the packaging, a few colors, and the amount per pack you got.  I'm sure there a small differences in a lot of the same worms due to plastic pooring, if you got really technical.  But ww2farmer tells ya his opinion straight out.  No sugar coating needed.  I respect that.  And appriciate the info he brings to the discussions as well.

I'm just wondering how a company would sue itself?

You could try and send a PM, at least it's offline, other than that, I suppose you could create a new topic/question...

This is the only way I rig a Fat Ika. The bait looks alive. When it is pulled forward the tentacles are pushed

back; when it falls on slack line the tentacles flutter up.

Kinami and GYCB are the exact same bait, same plastic formula, even the same colors in many instances just named differently by Kinami.  Only difference was usually the bait count per package.  If I recall correctly the Kinami line was made more for retail at the big box stores like Sports Authority and Wal-Mart.  Think of it as a marketing gimmick where GYCB didn't want his flagship line to seem watered down or a cheap budget brand like Mr. Twister.  Kinami allowed the GYCB senkos to stay in the specialty tackle stores as a "hobby only" type of lure.
