Topwater Popper, Spooks Require This Line

Featured Replies

I love throwing treble hook topwaters, like popers and Spooks on monofilament. I know a lot of guys use braid, but braid has no stretch which will rip those hooks out easier. I like 15lb monofilament for my topwaters. It's thin enough to get good distance, but thick enough to get fish out of cover. I still think monofilament is great in a lot of situations. People have forgotten about it with the advent of braid and flurocarbon, but it's still my preferred choice for a lot of techniques.

Braid won't rip the hooks out if you don't use the monster hook sets you have to use when fishing stretchy lines like mono. Like any tool, you have to adjust to braid to get the most out of it.

I cant use braid and didnt like the fluorocarbon that I tried. All my fishin is done with mono .

I use and recommend monofilament for all treble hook presentations.

There is no right and wrong in fishing.

6+3=9 but so does 5+4 1+8 2+7

You can accomplish the same task but yet do it differently from the next person.

Truer words have never been spoken when speaking in terms of bass fishing.

The main reason I like Mono over Flouro for treble topwaters is the floating aspects. Helps the bait work better. I do like the stretch aspect over braid although it isn't a huge issue. Definitely requires different hook sets!

Try P-line cxx, 10 lb. The best of both worlds.

Straight braid is amazing for walking baits. The near-zero stretch helps get a good hookset at long distance. I use Carbontex drag and I do not lose fish.

I happen to use braid with a leader for just about everything.  I say use what you like, it's your time on the water.  IMO the only difference is how one reacts when they get a strike, it's only adjustment in your own personal technique.

I use braid for everything, you have to adjust your hooksets, but other than that, it seems to perform well for everything I need it for.

I use braid for my topwater fishing but tend to use a softer rod.  I don't fish topwater that often other than frogs so i have yet to dedicate a set up for this technique.  The only thing about braid that I do not like for topwater is they seem to get tangled on the front hook more often when using walk the dog techniques.  Other than that minor inconvenience, i'll take the advantages any day.

One of several reasons I always use a leader, much easier to untangle.

One big factor in this is also the cost of mono, because I change the line I use for my treble hook baits quite often, a lot cheaper than braid/flouro

My best topwater lakes are very clear and except for very low light or night ops, the fish seem quite hesitant to commit to a surface presentation unless it's a Long way from the boat.  I can certainly do that with mono but the long distant hook set then becomes a problem, regardless of the rod.

So, braid fills the bill here very nicely.  Additionally if you've only ever used mono to work / walk a spook type bait, I'd urge you to try it on braid.  The direct feeling the line offers to the bait makes working it quite a bit easier and most important less fatiguing. And of course the hook set you can get are very nice.

Straight Big Game 15lb. , Stren 14lb. , Sufix Elite 14lb. , Sun Line Super Natural 16lb. all get the job done for top water ! ... Now going to experiment with Power Pro Hi - Viz Yellow 30lb. on a bait cast set up - will use a 2 ft. section of mono leader to keep hooks from fouling ... Lastly this set up requires less rod movement to work a top water lure properly - set drag to give slightly during the hook set .

I prefer braid for topwater. Especially walking baits and when i throwing a frog into pads or heavy veg

2x on the softer rod, been said on here quite a lot before, kinda the same thought process I had when I bought my Dobyns 705 CB Glass, I was trying to find a good rod for throwing cranks and before I had noticed that I was missing a lot of fish on a stiffer rod ripping the baits right out of there mouths, once I got that CB glass it wasn't a problem anymore. The rod has a lot more give which lets the fish really take the bait all the way in before Im putting the grind on her.

unless it's sunny and clear water (ie never in my neck of the woods), I use braid, no stretch is nice for walking the dog. Might consider a mono leader this season though, never hurts to try.
