Problems Setting Hook While Using 7" Zoombait Flukes

Featured Replies

I've been fishing with the 5" fluke for quite a while and started fishing with the 7" flukes a few months ago. I've been catching bigger fish while using the 7" flukes but it seems I can only set the hook 1/3 times while using it. Really ticking me off because I had a monster on today, it jumped, spit the fluke and the hook was still set weedless in the lure. Any suggestions? I'm using 5/0 worm hooks with it.

set the hook harder, use braid or skin hook the bait.   You can also create a groove through the plastic by working the hook through it a few times so there is not as much plastic to go through.  If the areas you are fishing are not that weedy, you can also rig it with the hook exposed.

5/0-6/0 Offset Round Bend ;)

Your rod may be to light to drive the hook you are using.

Ok, so exactly what hook & maker? Try a owner beast hook w cps

You might want to try a bigger hook and/or setting the hook harder.

I use 6/0 and commonly a 7/0 hook on the mag flukes.

Bigger hook and make sure to set the hook well. I never fished that size fluke until I went to Baccarac last year and it was a bit surprising to me how much of a hook set I needed.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Problem is I can't find anything bigger than 5/0 hooks, guess I'll order some online.

For the Zoom 7" magnum fluke, I’ve used two different types of Owner hooks and both offer a good hookup ratio.

One is the Owner 5132, which is a twistlock hook with an LOP bend (line-of-pull). The other is the Owner 5168,

a twistlock flipping hook with a round-bend. If you're having difficulty hooking up, you might try

the Owner flipping hook (5168), because the point is not in the line of pull, but is angled somewhat outward.

In real heavy cover though, the flipping hook will break out and hang up more often than the LOP hook,

but that's always the tradeoff.
