Pistol Grip Casting Rods

Featured Replies

Do any manufacturers still make pistol grip casting rods? I'm trying to find one for my father but can only find them by BPS and St. Croix (and for some unknown reason my dad doesn't like St. Croix rods...no idea why?...I think they're great).

Not many out there anymore .best thing to do is custom or yardsales and flea markets i have found some great pistol grips for a few bucks some barely used for 5$.craigslist is also good just look at your local listings

I know there are some ultra high end pistol grips available in Japan. The blanks and the reel seat are seperate, and they run anywhere between 100 to 200 for the reel seat, and 300-400 for the blank with guides attached to it. If you want to give him something special, I would buy a reel seat (they are just gorgeous) and have someone make a custom glass blank to go with it.

Don't know where you live but Academy has lots of them & if you don't live near one you can order on line.

Academy used to carry the All Star pistol grip 'Pitchin' rod. Not sure if they still do.

Haven't seen a pistol grip rod at academy in my area in a couple years. I bought that allstar pistol grip pitching rod for a few local lakes with low hanging branches. It works ok but you don't have much leverage with that short handle. Definetly a wrist breaker

I actually found and old Berkley "Worming and Cranking", pistol grip rod this summer floating along the shoreline. It was missing the insert from the first guide and the tip top. This thread, and the fact that I bought a kayak recently, motivated me to fix it up yesterday. Haven't fished a pistol grip in forever, should be interesting.

FYI, Tackle Direct list Shakespeare pistol grip baitcasting rods. Some anglers still like spin cast reels and prefer pistol grip handle rods.

I got out my old Bass Pro Shops "IM6 Tourney Special" pistol grip bait caster a while back and put a reel on it.  It felt nice and smooth, and a bit soft, like it would make a good cranking rod.  Every time I casted it, my left hand reached for the non-existent butt section for leverage.  Without that to provide some extra casting oomph, it made me feel like I had a weak wrist.   :laugh5:

Tight lines,

British Petroleum makes fishing rods....Just kidding. I know you ment BPS. Could not pass it up.
