Help Me Justify A Shimano Conquest

Recommended Posts

My accountant just let me know that I'm able to buy myself a gift on the companies account! I have been lusting over a Shimano Conquest for a while now, I'm just not sure what rod or technique to use it for.

I could use an upgrade for my topwater reel. Maybe put my Chronarch 51e on the topwater rod and get the Conquest for my Dobyns 704cb for jerkbaits? I really like the small profile of the Chronarch though.

I read the Conquest 101 is the same size as their old 51, is there any truth to that? Do you all have any experience with the conquest? What techniques? I use spinning combos for finesse stuff.

Thanks for the input.

I just got the 100HG a couple of weeks ago. Haven't got it on the water but just by playing around it feels wonderful. Super, super smooth. Absolutely beautiful, and yes the 100 is surprisingly small. The palm side is about the size of the old 50. With the x-ship and micro gears I think it will be great for any type of moving bait. It will probably last you forever.

If the lakes didn't freeze yesterday, I'd let you try mine.

Certainly the same palm size as the OG Conquest 51 (at least close enough for government work). The '14-'15 CQ 101's are far from finesse reels. My favorite use for it is swimming jigs with paddletails through pads and grass. They are very powerful reels.

You could buy one on your companies dime and you're having to try to convince yourself??? I'd already have it on the way to my house!

No decision is necessary on WHETHER to get a Conquest '14/'15 ... the only decision necessary is WHICH size and gear ratio to get ... ;)

Sometimes I really think we need a Goose52 tackle porn sticky at the top of the page. Beautiful collection as always.

He needs an NSFW label on those posts too. His tackle porn, although acceptable to see at work, leads many to dig deeper into tackle collections and waste countless hours on the clock searching for more. That's definitely not safe for work! hahaha

Ah - that's an old photo from early 2014. It WAS posted on the top of the page - in the "Show Your Stuff" thread (page 79 - post # 1184)...

Thanks Hootie!  I have to disclose though that only 4 of those are Conquests.  I'm up to 11 Shimano round reels at present: 4 Conquests, 1 TE-DC, 3 TE-GTs, 3 XTs

I'm still somewhat of a "minor-leaguer" compared to Maico1 however...

The Conquest is high on my list, but I opted for an Aldedaran for my newest Rainshadow.

I am VERY interested in a comparison of the Conquest versus the Calcutta CTE100GT.

The Conquest is more refined and it has the same spool as the CTE100GT. You are talking about the old model Conquest 100?

Life goals right there! Since It looks like Goose52 has a little bit of experience with these, where is the best place to buy? I'm thinking the 6.2:1 ratio would suit my needs best.

I bought my Conquest 200 from Digitaka.  Great price and fast shipping.  I'm going to get the 100HG as soon as I get my Christmas bonus. :D     You're going to love that reel!

Just pull the trigger, I received my CQ 401 a few days ago and it was worth every penny!

You can shop for the best price from a number of vendors...and I hear Digitaka mentioned quite a bit. In my case, I've bought a number of JDM reels from Japan Lure Shop.

Hey RW - we talked about this back in January so I'll re-use some of that discussion:

The CTE-100GT is the functional equivalent of a Conquest 100 (last generation - aka CQ00).  The differences are:

CQ has a forged handle / TE-GT has a stamped handle
CQ has a forged drag star / TE-GT has a stamped star
CQ has clicking spool tension knob and drag / TE-GT has no clicks
CQ has a ported palm-side sideplate / TE-GT is plain/unported

I have both the CTE-100GT and a CQ00-100 and they perform and feel the same to me. These photos show the external differences:

gallery_25379_1107_4888.jpg

NOW - to compare the CTE-100GT to the Conquest 2014/2015:

Conquest 14/15 has the same differences as mentioned above (forged, ported, clicks, etc.) PLUS has all the latest Shimano features and gizmos - X-Ship, micro-module gears, and SVS Infinity braking system, etc. The CQ 14/15 has a smaller sideplate and palms noticeably smaller than the CTE-100GT, it MIGHT (or might not) cast a bit farther due to the braking system, and will probably feel smoother to most folks due to the micro-module gears and X-ship.  All in all, just a nicer reel than the earlier generation.  Is CQ 14/15 enough better than a CTE-100GT to warrant buying a new reel?  That's up to each person to decide... ;)

Edit: I forgot to mention ONE more improvement in the new Conquest - the CQ15 "HG" geared model. Formerly, Shimano round reels were only available in a single gear ratio for each size. Now, Shimano is offering TWO ratios in the 100 and 200 size Conquests. The standard gear ratio gives about 23 IPT - approximately the same as the CTE-100GT. The new "HG" model, introduced this past summer, gives 30 IPT and really expands the envelope for the presentations that can be accommodated by the reel...

I have the 100TE GR, the 15 Conquest 100HG, the old Conquest 50S shallow spool, And an older plain Calcutta 50 recently tuned by Ian Shields.

The TEGT is on a Dobyns Champion 764 RMCB for medium square bills and Pointers and Megabass Visions.

I like the fact that I ca "wang" it far and fish shallow flats

The Conquest 50S is by far the best and most effortless the 3. I have 12 lb braid and pitch 1/4 jigs and plastics with a Loomis IMX 893.

The 15 Conquest is on a Custom St Croix LTB blank with a full Eva handle for Swim Jigs like Keitech Impact fat.

The super tuned Calxutta 50 is on a Black Elseil X4 for bladed jigs of 3/8 oz with Keitech trailers.

The size differences are minor but the Calcutta 50 feels like a well worn bar of soap. Very comfortable to Palm. The Conquest 50S is the smoothest and most fun to fish

The 15 Conquest 100 HG is a tad larger than the 50s. The 100TEGT A TAD larger than the 15 Conquest but more comfortable to Palm (in MY medium sized hands) than the 15 Conquest 100.

I really like ALL of them. And I'm constantly putting them on multiple rods to see how the dynamics change

What I want NOW is the older model Conquest 50 with the deeper spool. All the doodads on the 15 Conquest do not make them a better reel. In my opinion, just a FASTER reel. I've got many fast reels. Only others I have that I love as much are the Steez and the Zonda 10 and Airy Red Pixy. And of course a 105 TDZ

Thanks guys for the help. I ended up getting the 101HG. I think I need to find a rod to pair her up with.
