Went out yesterday (Herrick Park South Lake - Isabella County).

(From my blog)
I stuck to shallower water between 0-8ft. I focused on coves and areas with cover (both subsurface and exposed) – whether it was fallen trees, submerged logs, heavy vegetation pockets, etc.. it seemed to be an excellent call.

I caught my first few LM shortly into my trip. The southwest corner; with a huge half submerged fallen tree, provided excellent opportunities to land fish. Positioning my kayak to take advantage of the rather large tree openings proved to be the right call. I was throwing a ZMan Chatterbait (white) with a StrikeKing rage tail craw (brown/blue fleck). These LM were all smaller (12-14″) so I decided after a few (and a few bites but no action), I would paddle on.

On the south/southeast side of the lake, there are renting cabins nestled back into it’s own little cove. A few small docks and plenty of overhanging limbs provided yet another great opportunity. The only problem here though was that I was directly in the way of the north wind and it was hard to maneuver my kayak to a position without being blown back into the shore. However, I stuck it out long enough to a land a real nice LM  by continuously working the shallows (0-6ft) underneath the overhanging limbs. I was using the same ZMan Chatterbait (white) with a StrikeKing rage tail craw (brown/blue fleck). I wanted so bad to upload a photo but my girlfriend deleted it off her phone on ‘accident’.

After cruising around the lake a little more and catching another smaller LM off a huge submerged log poking out of a cattail overgrow, I came to an area (north bank) that screamed bedding to me. While the bass aren’t in the spawn phase yet, this spot looked awfully enticing for when they would be. As I approached this bank, I threw parallel to the shore (about 4ft in depth) and reeled that Chatterbait in nice and slow. I landed another nice LM. Not as thick as my first one but probably around the same weight as it seemed to be a little longer than my first.

All in all, I landed 5 bass in the Kayak with 2 (one hog) getting off right at the Kayak. Not shabby for 2 hours of fishing. I’m still getting used to the kayak and I’m still getting used to fishing from a kayak. It’s a different beast.

I honestly have only been able to get out for an hour or so here or there all season, fishing from the bank and have caught a whopping total of TWO fish. One was a bluegill that was almost as big as the bass that I caught.  Should change soon, though.

Fishing has been really good the past couple weeks but ever since all this heat got the water temp over 70 the bass seem to be tight lipped all of a sudden

I am in the Kalamazoo area. I fish Long and West lake. Fishing has been slow this year, prob due to the crazy temps. It was just starting to pick up, then they sprayed the lakes for weed control- That always throws off the bite.

Did some night fishing on Five lakes out of Clare, MI Sunday night (made for a tired day at work Monday). Had a helluva night!! Over 15 bass hit my lure(s), landed 10-12 (I forgot). Biggest was just over 4lbs and a handful in the 3lb range. Fantastic night. Fishing 0-12ft of water. FYI: This was 90mins of fishing.

Biggest of the night (below). Also, my PB for this year so far.

Got on the water today right at sunrise - a pretty stiff breeze came on at about 8 am.  I'd been on this lake just a few days ago in what seemed to me like very similar conditions.  Last time I started on wind blown points - tried several spots & baits.  Did nothing.  No bait & no Bass.  So shifted gears & fished weedy mid-lake flats.  Got bit right away. Both Brown & Green Bass.

So this morning, I started on mid-lake weed flats - Nada. No Bait & No bass to be found.  Tried several spots & baits.  So I shifted gears, went back to windy points.  Got bit right away.  All Brown bass.

Conditions on both trips looks the same to me but obviously something changed.  I just shook my head - I think they do that on purpose.

Long lake is tough enough to fish anyways hah. I always struggle there

The north end has been more productive this year for some reason. The spraying has been clearing out alot of the pads which may be why. I have a place in the cove near the beach that has all the channels dug out- used to be great fishing until the invasives came in and they had to spray. Buzzbaits were my favorite baits. Now I have been using small swimbaits on jigheads, and of course senkos

I catch more pike out there than anything lol. Gourdneck and sugarloaf are the two lakes I seem to do best on in the area. Caught my pb of 5.62 on gourdneck last year

Nice! Gourdneck has alot of steep dropoffs right? Did you have to launch on Hogsett?

Long does have great Pike fishing, especially late summer early fall. I like to fish large black spinnerbaits in about 6-8  feet of water. Chatterbaits work well also. The biggest bass I have caught were 20+ inches- One on a black jitterbug, another on a black buzzbait (both in the cove) and the thrid on a GP senko near the commune
