Extra Deep Cranking Rod

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a rod to throw extra deep crankbaits like the manns 30 or 10xd. They just seem to heavy for my BPS cranking stick. I've heard good things about a Dobyns 806 for deep cranks, but that is out of my price range.

I see St. Croix has a MOJO Heavy Action, medium fast. It says it is a flipping rod, but was this be any good for extra deep cranking? It is rates for up to 2 oz. I really want to stay less than $150 on this rod.

For DEEP cranking, I like a long rod, MH power, and moderate taper for making bomb casts, and keeping all of the rod loaded while fighting a hooked fish.  Fats rods are what a minority prefer, but I like a slower blank.  I use a Pinnacle DH5 7-11 cranking rod for this.  A 5:1 reel and 12# fluoro round out the combo.

I have a MHM rod for medium to deeplay cranks. It just doesn't have the power to sling a big 10xd.

I would also be open to a used rod.

I don't think you'll like that H/F Mojo for big divers.  The only thing close that I've used in the Saint Croix line up is the Legend Tournament Deep Cranker 7-11.  SC's power ratings run a bit heavier than stated.

If you like Gary Dobyn's work, perhaps take a look at the Fury Line.

The 7'6" Med Hvy or the 7'9" Med Hvy Swimbait could be in your wheel house.

I'm just curious... why don't you think I would like this rod ( MJC711HMF )?

It's way more powerful than you think.

Never used used one.  They didn't impress me in my hand.

Agreed.

But although I have, like & fish that stick, it does not possess the required heft to effectively fish the baits (10xd) the OP wants to use it for.

Even that rod is only rated for 1.5 ounce lures. The 10xd is nearly 2 ounces (1.92).

I have a Champion 806cb, it's pretty awesome.

You aren't interested in selling it are you ;-)?

Cashion DD90476 deep diving crankbait rod should work for you, excellent quality and very light weight. They also make a 7'11" heavy XD10 crank bait rod.

BPS came out with a new line of cranking rods last year, they offer a 7'10" mag heavy rated 1-4 ounces. I use this rod for the 10xd, and it handles them just fine and they are $99

I may check into that. That isn't a bad price. I have the 7'6" BPS Cranking stick in MH. It is a little heaavy, but works good for baits around the 3/4 oz size.

I see BPS rates all their cranking rods as a fast action. Is this an instance where fast action with BPS is similar to a moderate or medium fast in another brand?

Falcon low rider xd cranker. Made for the 10xd.

Yup since it's a composite the fast would be similar to a moderate in graphite.

I am not selling it. And thanks Mr. Francho!

I have heard great things about the Falcon Lowrider, they're second on my list.

Got one of the newer style BPS crankin sticks with micro guide 7'6 for my deeper cranking and its a great rod. May get the 7'10 for 10xd but honestly don't really need that as I don't crank that deep very often if at all

I throw a 10xd ALOT! I use a Dobyns 806cb, but for the money, the Irod Fred's Crank Launcher is hard to bear. It's rated for 1.5oz but will handle a 10xd just fine. Also, the Irod Bama Rig Special would work great. I have the Bama Rig Special and it's a very versitale stick. I've thrown Bama rigs, 10xds, and big flitter spoons on them and it was perfect.  Won't find a better rod for $150
