Cabelas Sale Imminent

I shop at both Cabela's and BPS. I think the only loser in this deal is gonna be the consumers. I agree that BPS will be pushing its own brand of everything more, but they have been doing that for decades. Every year the BPS catalog has more BPS brand items (lure, reels, rods, clothing, etc.) than the last year. I think prices will go up, making websites like ebay and buying used items more popular with anglers looking for a deal. All in all, I believe this is gonna be a negative for us the fishermen and women.

Dang Johnny Morris is one rich SOB. He is the Walmart of bass fishing now. I just heard the other day that he owns almost all the major bass boat brands now as well. Ranger, champion and skeeter.

Can you still consider yourself family owned when you're a publicly traded company?

You are right - according to what I read a hedge fund manager said the company was "ran like a family business" and didn't pay enough attention to the bottom line.

I saw no distinction between the two stores.  Just retailers doing retail.  Curious to see how they merge the stores.  I bet... Some BPS stores will relocate into cabelas locations if they are close. I think BPS puts their name on the doors of them all after a few years. Just my hunch.

Can't prove they own Skeeter boats but BPS owns ranger, triton, stratos, and champion. Just read that Skeeter & G3 are owned by Yamaha.

That's sounds right to me. That's crazy that all would sell.

I used to be a frequent shopper at BPS until I finally decided to do my purchasing at Tackle Warehouse 3 years ago.  I never realized how expensive BPS was until I started comparing.

Is there any way we can take advantage of this buyout and get some good cabela's deals, or is that not how these things go down?

they aren't very likely to close nor convert any of the stores, except for only the poorest performing stores.  they're buying them so that no matter which one you shop at, the money goes into the same pockets in the end.  will more than likely be business as usual at both chains.

As long as Cabela's stays open I don't really care. There's one a lot closer to me than there is a BPS.

Maybe BPS will carry the Cabela's line of sun protection clothing.

Johnny Morris has been on a acquisition spree lately!

Buy the name and change the upper management is how this plays out.

chattanooga just got a bass pro last week and a cabelas a year ago literally 2 miles apart this should be interesting

That's true, it'd be hard to say no to that. But from a customer point of view I'm hopeful that TW doesn't ever sell

Cabelas has been family owned - now it won't be

Cabela's went from being family owned to publicly owned several years ago.

I can't imagine that BPS would keep two stores within a few miles of each other open. If they do close a store, there will be huge sales at the closing stores, and whatever doesn't get sold gets will be moved to existing stores as clearance inventory.  In the short term it could be great for the those of us that want to beef up our collections...

I've picked up a ton of gear that way from my local Gander Mt. It seems they are the repository for all of the other Gander Mountains nearby that have closed.  I was buying Zoom, Power Bait and Lake Fork bags of soft plastics for as low as $.75 a bag, various hard baits for $.97 and Skeet Reese rods for $20 (love em or hate em, 20 bucks is a dang good deal for those)...
