Texas Rigged Jig?

Recommended Posts

Member Catt mentioned a Texas rigged jig. I have never heard of this. Can anyone explain in detail?

You can buy bullet weights that will hold a skirt giving the same appearance . I have some lead 1/4 ounce ones but dont remember where I got them from .

In the 1980's I use to take 1/2 ounce weights and grind them down until they would accept a skirt . That was a lot of work.

May be thinking of swinging jig heads that use a standard worm style hook?

It stared for me back in the 70s when I use to make lures, one night I decided to stuff a bullet weight into a rubber skirt. It was so difficult I gave up after only making a half a dozen. This little trick when paired with a craw worm won me many a tournament.

Scott's Marina on the Texas side of Toledo Bend is a one room building, a small wharf big enough for a couple jon boats, and a launch. Scott sold Community Coffee which is the #1 coffee of Cajuns and why I hung around. He had maybe a dozen packs of worms, 4-5 spinner baits & traps. On one particular morning I notice some new lures lying on the counter, I picked one up & the little card read "Big Red's Flying Jig". Inside was the lead head of a spinner bait, a skirt, & a 3/0 offset hook with a hitch hiher attached. I bought em all!

This was the perfect answer to putting a skirt on a bullet weight!

Later I found Barlow's Tackle sold just the weights and then Cyclone Lures made a Slip-n-Jig.

For some anglers its how they can get a bullet weight through cover easier than a jig, a problem I don't have with jigs.

For me it's changing the profile of a t-rig, the added action of a skirt, & eliminates buying a skirt bead.

Like with a jig I use skirts with round strands, flat strands, fine cut strands, or wide cut strands.

I can't really explain its fish attracting abilities but what I do know is I've fished behind guys throwing t-rig & jigs and caught fish they missed.

Is it the bait? I don't know but it works which is all I care about!

Thank you Catt. Very interesting. I love a story that starts out "It all started back in the 70's..." Good stuff. I'd rather not buy a whole new batch of tungsten weights with skirt collars. It looks like they are made only in heavier (1/2 oz and up) sizes. My internet search came up with Paycheck Baits Punch Skirt http://www.***.com/Paycheck_Baits_Punch_Skirts_2pk/descpage-PBPS.html It looks like I can add just a skirt to any standard Texas Rig as it looks like it just has a plastic collar with a smallish hole for your line to pass through.  Knock knock... bait monkey is at the door. I gotta go answer it...

Bobber stop, bullet weight, punch skirt, straight shank, brush hog.

I've yet to find something better to flip into wood.

Skirts work in front of swimbaits also...Try a clear with red flake to mimic gills in clear water...I just learned this trick and so far I like it, just a few strands. You can make a hub to tie the skirt on out of anything, the silicone "Hubs" from quick change skirts sold by Companies as punch skirts like lure parts online has, are identical to the grommets used in Tattoo guns and you can buy 100 for a few bucks. You can also buy tunsten Beads overseas for pennies that work as hubs, but .37 from Lurecraft is good, or just use the rivet from a buzzbait...Easy to be creative.

I used to carry tons of colors, now I only carry the major shades and use my trailer to give the color I want, but I like flash in a few...Black/Silver, Black/Gold, my favorite or GP/Gold...Otherwise I use black, Black blue, Shad color with chart, brown with red and gold and orange belly...

Some days a skirt helps, some days it will turn them completely off, no understanding of why, but always try both, sometimes they just want a bait under a weight, sometimes they want a skirt. I am starting to really like the star flash skirts since they have a different action than Silicone and different colors and flash. Flash helps in heavy cover and stained water, so does sound so the bead or hub matters, make sure if you use something you make yourself it does not have sharp edges....I also find I like less strands than most people, and more flare. It's all a confidence thing but Punch skirts can be used on any soft bait you use, or just use a Hula Grub?

If you're into making your own stuff you can buy the mold to make them too, but it only goes up to 9/16 oz. I pour and tie my own. It's a good substitute for a jig in the thick stuff.

I have an old spinnerbait mold and if I wanted to , I could make 1/8 ,1/4 , 3/8 and 1/2 ounce . Just insert a  wire in the cavity and no hook .

What I like about the Texas Rigged Jig is once I zip tie my skirt in place I have a compact one piece jig. I don't have tackle boxes full of pieces & parts; I have a tackle box of jigs ready to go.

Name brand doesn't matter, just try em!

Thanks everyone. I think I found what I need. I have supreme confidence in a Texas rigged worm so now I'm going to add a skirt from Paycheck Baits and experiment with different trailers. I have no need for punching because the lakes i fish have no surface grass or pads so I don't need heavy weights. I have 0 confidence in a jig so maybe this will be my transition drug.
