Why Are They Fishing The Damiki Rig

Featured Replies

I have been keeping up with the elite series tournament on Cherokee that is currently taking place and I am puzzled. I know the damiki rig is known to be deadly in that area of the country but I don't understand why I am not seeing much drop shot fishing going on. People are video game fishing and I would assume a drop shot could fit the bill just as well? I have never seen guys in the elite series fishing the damiki rig and now it seems like they all are. Anybody have an explanation?

Snowden said he would normally use a drop shot but the fish were very tight to the bottom, so he used the Damiki rig.  Other than that I just chalk it up to the local thing being the local thing for a reason...It works ;).  The small shad bait on a jighead does have different appearance and movement than the same bait on a drop shot.  Something about that bait just seems to work in that part of the country.

A lot of lakes/regions have a 'local' thing like that...Even around here where both of us live.  Avocado Stingray grub on the Potomac in winter, Speed Shad down on Kerr/Gaston, Toothache spoon on Anna, etc, etc...

The Damiki Rig is the local "big deal" down on those waters this time of year, and a good many of the Elites prefished with locals that turned them on to the technique, and the ones that didn't would have heard about it through some other channel. These guys aren't stupid or stubborn - When in Rome, do as the Romans do. You likely won't hear another word about the bait from these guys after they leave Cherokee.

Had to look it up too. That's how we catch striped bass in the winter. Its been pretty good in the Ches. Bay this year. The trick is to resist the urge to work the lure.

At weigh in, Swindle said he would rather throw a jig and not get bit than use that video game damiki rig. I found that hilarious, but at the same time, id use whatever I needed to stay above the cut. Swindle is the man by the way! Rooting for the Inland Northwest local Brandon Palaniuk to win it! !

I saw that!  He went on to say that everyone would be selling their damiki gear on eBay next week - all you want for $1.  Dude cracks me up.

Drop shot imparts too much action where as these baits are almost deadsticked

And here's the part where I just have to ask: do we really need a new name for every microscopic variation on the theme of "plastic body on a jighead"?

I believe there is a rule that the name must give as little information as possible about what the rig is or how it's used.

Its a soft jerkbait on a swimbait head?? C'mon man.Just saw a post about it on Twitter.

The Damiki Rig has been around for quite a while, I'm not sure where it originated but it definitely seems to be a good ol' boy technique for Tennesee winter smallmouth.

That's exactly what Zona said however if you watched Feider work his Damiki rig he was quivering his rod tip pretty good. Seems like a pretty boring way to fish.

Yet another reason the "Elites" drive me kinda nuts.  The "best" bass fisherman in the world needing locals to show them what to use and how to fish a new lake.

The "damiki rig" is just veritical jigging. Winter river rats have been doing this for 40+ years. Same style bait. Same style jig. Nothing new, just a new catchy.name.

i know it's the most boring bass live ever to watch.  4 days of spinning gear fished vertically is as boring as a 4 day nascar race.

In the early 80's Jack Chancellor coined the term "do nothing" C-rigging a 4" French fry worm. This was followed by Charlie Brewer slider jig with do nothing worms. What is a Damiki rig, any Damiki soft plastic fished doing nothing, nail rig or Ned jig.

The Cherokee tournament may be won by using the drop shot rig doing something.

So true. When fish are stacked up in certain places this type of fishing is considered "Old School". I know guys who do this for walleye and smallies but they use live bait on a small jig. No difference really. Sit on top of a hole and drop the bait down and move it just a bit and wait for the bites.

Thank heavens for the Ulterra and those giant graphs.  If it weren't for those, the guys would've had to actually try and fish!

Coming soon - technique specific rods, reels and lines for fishing the Damiki rig. Get 'em while they're hot!
