I've noticed that there's been ALOT more boating accidents/ fishing accidents this year. If it's not a boating accident then it's someone injured while fishing and more

Just more sensationalist click bait.  I haven't seen any evidence that the accident rate has gone up.

Only thing going up is people getting the reports out, before they were all local news now they get shared out until they are national.

This I do believe is on the rise.  As the popularity has boomed, I see a lot of stupid/dangerous activity on the water.  The main thing is as simple as wearing a PFD.

I agreee, a life jacket takes literally 30 seconds to put on and saves lives. People just don't realize that until it's too late

I just reread this and realized how INSANELY RIDICULOUS THIS IS. Like come on, who pumps gas into a rod locker. Alcohol was probably a major factor here

I just started kayak fishing and I've been out a few times and observed I'm one of the few out of ~20-30 folks on kayaks, paddleboards, john boats, etc. wearing a PFD. I'm a strong swimmer but I wouldn't think of being out there without a PFD. I tell my kids, repeatedly, wearing a PFD is like putting on your seatbelt.

This is an increasing problem. I see it on local waters ALL the time.

People just getting in to the sport, or even long-timers that adhere

to the "you only need a life preserver IN your boat" rule thus don't

wear one. You'll even see it in pictures posted here on the forums!

 

I have twice forgotten my PFD and twice have called home to have

my wife or one of my sons bring it to me (was after I had unloaded

and realized my error).

 

Life is too precious to worry about being "cool" (dual meaning), or

"uncomfortable" wearing a PFD. My boys are not allowed to go out

in kayaks, canoes, w/o wearing one.

There are probably a countless amount of incidents/accidents that would have ended differently had people worn PDFs. They  just don't see beyond the "cool" factor. If a boating accident happens and you're injured, it doesn't matter how strong of a swimmer you are, without a PFD you probably will drown. Even a capsized canoe can go south.
