How to get bad smell out of boat?

Featured Replies

I had 2 mice die in my boats bow compartment. It is a plastic bin with a lid that is aluminum. I took the bin out and washed it with piping hot water and detergent and then used Lysol antibacterial wipes. I used the wipes on the lid of the compartment. I then aired it out for a day. It still smells. Not as bad as it once was, but still not bad. I was thinking about putting a box of Arm & Hammer baking soda in the compartment. But not sure if there is a better way.

What should I do?

Maybe scrub it with distilled vinegar?

That won't eat the plastic?

That's what we use to wash our towels in the washing machine the first time we wash them. We also use it when our front load washer starts not smelling so fresh, so i Wouldn't think it would

What I do to get the fish smell out of a cooler is fill it with water and pour some bleach in, and let it sit overnight. Might work for you since you are able to pull the compartment out of the boat.

Vin or bleach let it soak, take he bin out, fill them up and let sit for the day that should do it. But d**n Man, feed and water your mice better than that.

You could just leave it, maybe that will deter other mice from wanting to move in to take their place.

As mentioned, the chlorine or vinegar might take it out, but those smell almost as bad as the dead mouse.  A good cleaner like Spray Nine (Home Depot has it) might take it out without having to replace one stink for another.

A lot of of pine tree air fresheners.

It's probably not the dead mouse smell, rather, it's mouse urine that you smell.  Good luck in getting it all out.  I had one of my boga grips in storage and it reeked of urine smell.  Tried everything to get the smell out.  Ended up having to tear off the neoprene grip and sent it in to Eastaboga, they replaced it.  Smell is now gone.

Just don't do Vinegar and Bleach.   That's chlorine gas.

Ammonia/bleach=death

I don't know if you know anyone with a ozone machine but I bet it would work. I use mine to get the wet dog smell out of my truck. Also take wife's cigarette smell out. Never had anything it didn't work on.

Best way to get the bad small out of a boat is to leave Uncle Louie and his 6-pack, box of Slim Jims and bucket-o-worms back at the dock...

The same holds true for bleach and ammonia.
