Bass fishing, but caught other species

Recommended Posts

What other species have you caught while targeting bass, and what did you catch them on? This should be interesting and I am sure Pike and their cousins will come out as number one since those hammer handles love to destroy or steal bass lures. I will get us started.

Nothern pike/chain pickeral/muskie  (spinnerbait, crank, jerk, topwater, plastic worm)

Gar (lipless, spinnerbait, fluke, live shiner)

Crappie/speckled perch (lipless)

Bluegill (crankbait)

Mudfish/bowfin (spinnerbait, live shiner)

Catfish (roostertail, plastic worm, crank)

I catch pike and bowfin with some regularity on everything that I use for bass. Recently that includes buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, wacky worms, shakyheads, texas rigged creatures and worms, drop shot.

Lots of panfish...Crappie and yellow perch on crankbaits, Rock bass on poppers and propbaits, stickworms, White bass on a ned rig. I had a pumpkinseed a few weeks ago manage to gobble enough of a t-rigged 4.5" megastrike megabug to get caught.

Haven't had a catfish on lure in quite awhile (i'm probably due), but I have had caught them on in-line spinners and grubs before.

Catfish most times out; probably 50% channel, 40% blue, and 10% flathead

Snakeheads quite often on Potomac and tribs

American and Hickory shad in the spring

Pickerel, crappie, stripers, perch, and bluegill on occasion.

Had a six-species day back in May: perch, bluegill, LMB, crappie, snakehead, American shad...all while fishing for LMB

sunfish, crappies, perch, dogfish, bullhead, carp and my favorite a snapping turtle on a plastic worm it pulled like crazy

My most common by-catches are pickerel, with pike being a close second. Anything I throw for bass I've caught pickerel and pike on as well. Also just about every kind of panfish, but especially rock bass. They destroy bass lures like a fish 3x their size.

I've caught a couple catfish on senkos, and several bluegill on jerkbaits and the Ned rig. Hooked a gar on a dropshot but didn't land him (which didn't hurt my feelings much)

Plastic worms; musky, pike, walleye, rainbow trout, channel cats, crappie, red ears, stripe bass and bluegill.

Jigs; musky*, pike, walleye, lake trout, channel cats, red ear, crappie, stripe bass.

Spoons; pike, channel and blue cats, crappie, rainbow trout, carp, stripe bass

Spinnerbaits; musky, pike.

Crankbaits; musky, pike, walleye, channel cats, crappie, stripe bass.

Surface lures; musky, pike, stripe bass.

Swimbaits; stripe bass, musky, pike, steelhead**.

Tom

PS, musky, pike, lake trout and walleye from western Ontario Canada, all these fish hit bass lures while fishing for bass, not targeting them specifically. Stripers are common when using swimbaits on some of my home lakes. Big channel catfish are always a surprise and will hit most bass lures.

* PB 37# musky on 1/4 black hair jig, Lake of the Woods.

** PB steelhead on a silver Wiggle Wart, lake Sammamish WA.

My biggest surprise catch was a 20+ lb king salmon on a jerkbait. A bass reel's wimpy ~10 pounds of drag is nothing to a salmon, so it spooled me, but the knot I used to tie the braid to my spool actually held.

Catfish, stripers, white bass, white perch and crappie, mostly on crankbaits. Crappie in my local reservoir seem to really like the gold lipless crank. We've had days when they won't leave them alone. Bluegill will bite the dressed back hook on a lot of topwaters. I've caught a 1/4 lb warmouth with an 8" plastic worm in crammed in his mouth.

Stripers on the Spook.

Warmouth, yellow perch, bluegills and shellcrackers while crappie fishing with jigs or minnows.

Catfish, bass, white perch and gar while striper fishing.

Soft shell turtles while catfishing.

I've had a couple fish that I never got turned, probably catfish, possibly very large stripers.

In my event yesterday I caught a limit (4) walleye one being 23" all on a drop shot, three yellow perch 2 over 15" on a 1.5 squarebill and 2 catfish flippin docks. I caught everything but the bass I needed yesterday.

Worst thing I ever caught was about a 4' cottonmouth on a buzzbait at Decker Lake outside of Austin.  It hit like a freight train. I stopped reeling once I realized what had come out of the reeds to hit my bait but he kept coming at the boat.  I cut the line and moved across the lake.

On Lake Travis we were out late at night fishing lighted docks for white bass.  I cast a Rat L Trap into the ball of shad and let it drop.  All of a sudden something hit and took off.  It smoked my drag and spooled my UL spinning reel.  Had to have been a decent striper, but I never saw it.

I have caught some interesting fish while bass fishing.

Bowfin

Chain Pickerel

Catfish

Crappie

Bluegill

While fishing a tournament on the St Johns river 2 months ago - we made the run up to Lake George.  There I caught the following:

Lady fish

Puffer fish

Stingray

Armored Catfish

The stingray and the armored catfish were very cool.  The lady fish would surge and jump into the air like 10 feet...it was crazy

I catch all kinds of different species of fish while fishing for bass. Channel cats, green sunfish, and drum are the most common bycatch. Channel cat and sunfish will hit anything, and I've caught drum on every variety of bait except topwater. During the winter months I'll catch lots of white bass and wipers too.

I've caught some bluegill, white bass and drum on crankbaits.

Years ago, I caught a big crappie on a Snagless Sally.

mainly  drum and catfish.

they stock my home lake every spring with decent sized trout.they seem to love the Ned Rig.

never target the trout, but have caught several limits while bass fishing.
