I'm Back ~ And It Feels Pretty Good.

   Last summer (2016) while mowing the grass (of all things), I stepped in a mole hole (didn’t see it) that my dogs had dug out in the back forty.  It was on a decent incline.  I ended up taking a bit of a tumble and really torqued my left knee pretty good.   Never ended up totally out of commission (meaning I could still fish thankfully) but I was otherwise most definitely on the DL and unable to exercise at all.

   Like many, I’ve had my share of ‘Rehabs’ – never enjoyed any of them.  And this particular evolution included a ‘healing’ process that was not progressing like I had hoped; it was considerably slower.  Not exactly a spring chicken, I was hopeful it would heal without surgical intervention, but the snail’s pace healing was causing some real concern.

Besides seriously hating limping everywhere I went, not being able to really play & bound around with my dogs, having to guard & baby it for so long, I really missed being able to workout ! 

   I eased back into exercising & took it super slow.  And little by little, month after month, I began getting more & more range of motion and less & less pain.  I’ll admit that it was difficult to remain patient & positive. 

   Well, it’s taken what amounts to just about 15 months – but I’m back !   And it feels pretty darn good.  Everyone who has endured a rehab and overcomes the adversity that always accompanies it, knows what it’s like to regain most if not all of one’s abilities to a level previously enjoyed.   

It’s one of life’s memorable moments. 

As a final note, during all current & future yard maintenance & landscaping evolutions, I am super focused & maintain a very high level of situational awareness; especially when in the vicinity of mole high traffic areas.

 Really looking forward to, as well as appreciate the ability to do, each & every workout.

That’s my story & I’m sticking to it.

Good to hear!  I remember doing those PT exercises and light work outs after they put my shoulder labrum back together.  I use to grimace and wait for the pain to start.  About 9 months later I finished working out one day, and realized that it didn't hurt.

It took me a couple of days to get use to it not hurting.

That's awesome! Glad you're back in the swing of things. Fortunately I've never had to endure something like that(knock on wood). Although I think I'm developing fishing elbow, if there's a such thing...lol.

Ain't that the truth ~ 

After over 3 decades of routine running, and before I had worn something out, while the lower body was still OK, a couple of years ago I quit running.  Didn't want to push it.  And then this happened which made me shake my head.

  I miss running some but still do bike a bit with & without the dogs.  The canine's like it because they can actually run farther & longer, and I appreciate the no impact - even though most of it is on trails / dirt.

Glad to hear that @A-Jay. Back in 2015 I was on a jog and saw a dog in a yard off the leash. My first thoughts was invisible fence but that wasn't the case. As soon as the dog crossed the sidewalk I knew I was in 'oh ****' mode.

 

The dog got closer and I slowed to a stop. The dog ran in front of me, then around me. When I shifted around pivoting on my left foot I heard a pop in my knee. Right after the pop, the dog bit me in the calf. X-Rays and MRI showed nothing but I haven't been able to run since.

 

Like you, I limped around for about a year until I could walk without a limp. I started working out doing more lower body exercises - Squats, RDL's things like that - and have at least gotten to the point where I can walk without pain. Running, jumping or any high impact activities have been taken away from me. It sux when you have a 12 y/o boy who still wants to get a game of touch football on the beach or participate in a coaches/players game of softball.

 

Very jealous but at the same time, I'm very happy for you.

Glad you're fully back in the saddle.

 

As the parts age we need to exercise a bit more care sir!

Good to hear man!  I know you are fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. These set backs are painful on the mind when we want to be working out but can't!!!  I'm in that boat now as well. Blew my shoulder out two and a half months ago and still it's not healthy!  I'm actually getting depressed not being able to make it to the gym!  Like you my shoulder will heal and all will be right. Glad to hear you're back!  Always seems to happen to me when im peaking too!

Shoulder deals can be a real bear but reasonable & smart rehab often does the trick.

We don't heal like we used to and it is good to hear your good to go.

2 yrs ago I tore my quad off my knee. It had to be reattach and in doing so, the VMO tore.

It's been over 2 yrs and it is as good as it is going to get.  Let's say, no more kneeling at church.

 

I think many of us are going to pay for living hard.......

I have done the shoulder rehab. and it deffinatly helped. best of luck

Do you mind sharing your leash / harness setup for the cycle. I have a couple of mushers that I'd love to setup to pull the bike.

 We use Howling Dog Alaska gear exclusively.

Have been for over 10 years. Superior High Quality stuff.

In fact we're still using the very first sets we purchased in 2010, it's perfect.
