Hey All,

 

Mywife has had some nasty skin cancer issues, thus, I have been asked politely to wear sun protective clothing.  I now wear SPF pants and shirts.  I have found these to be really nice and actually keep me cooler.    I really like the hooded tops to protect my bald dome ( even though I get called unibomber all the time).   Question is, what brand do you like if wearing SPF fishing wear??

I have several favorites ~ Columbia has been a long time mainstay and recently HUK has really been coming on strong.

Huk shirts, UA shorts, Simms or Columbia gloves, and Sunday Afternoon wide brim hat. I have had skin cancer cut off so I take it serious.

Columbia is hard to beat but Patagonia has a hoodie that is awesome, but more expensive

I buy the Field and Stream brand when they are buy one get one 50% off. They have stood up to occasional fish slime and blood just fine.

Thanks all.   I have used Cabelas brand and got a free Huk with Tatula SV purchase.   I will have to grab a Columbia Hoodie.   I will look up Patagonia.   I will pay up for comfort and quality.

I have been buying a lot of Simms lately. My buddy is one of their artists, so I buy whatever they'll put his artwork on. His artwork is sweet, and the clothing is quality. 

 

 

 

Solumbra makes nice men's & women's SPF 50 clothing. Cabela's brand sun protection clothing is good with several styles to choose from if you like their labels. Columbia is OK, little too heavy for me and doesn't breath as well as the others mentioned.

Similar to just about everyone above, I'm sold on Columbia and Huk. The Patagonia gear is also great, but I've usually found it to be pricier for similar fit/feel/protection. I do sometimes cross over into my mountain biking gear (don't worry, it's not the spandex and lycra kind, it's Club Ride), which is similar in weight and UPF but obviously built more for biking than fishing.

Another think to remember is that Patagonia has a lifetime warranty and is easy to use.  I am on their pro program and it is a great company

 

Thanks again guys.   I am going to check these brands out and see if they  are what I am looking for.   I have seen a couple shirts with cooling technology, anyone tried these?   Do they actually work?   That would be helpful during a long day on the boat.   I have tried the tube face masks that you wet, snap, and wear, and they actually worked well while they were wet.   If the shirts could do that, they would be worth it.   I wouldn't want to wear a wet shirt though.  I assume they somehow cool while you wear them.   I think I read they fool while they evaporate perspiration.

I have and have used the Columbia onmi freeze tech stuff and you read right. It cools with evaporation. You need to be sweating or get it wet for it to work and it does work but it's gotta have enough moisture to be able to evaporate. The one I got has some extra ventilated material along the arms and sides, I like that better than the evaporation tech part of it. 

Is really UPF clothing UV proof, how about other sport clothings that never claim UPF rate?

I'm kind of cheap guy, I use Hanes cool dri long sleeve shirt, cheap and you can buy anywhere. 

I purchased the new Simms solarflex long sleeved hoody. It's actually cooler to wear then a cotton t-shirt. It even has little elastic bands inside the sleeves that go over your thumbs. Will not wear another shirt now and I've tried quite a few. I'm very fair skinned and burn easy. Give it a try, you'll be happy you did!

Free Fly makes some awesome shirts from bamboo.

They feel like cotton and are super light weight and can be worn on and off the water.  They are often on sale.  Note buy a size bigger as they shrink

Thanks NHBull.    I have seen bamboo in my search as well.   I have to research that a little more to figure out the benefits of bamboo in clothing.  

I hate polyester stuff (which HUK uses), so I go with Colombia or other brands that are cotton.  It's cooler and breathable and feels better on the skin.

I wear one all the time too, thus "fishwizzard".   My buddy never gets tired of that joke.

Clothes with a UPF have been tested and met certain benchmarks in order to be labeled as such. You can get away with not buying stuff that carries a UPF if you do some research. For example, synthetic fabrics tend to block way more UV than their natural counterparts. Polyester or nylon are decent choices. Cotton, not so much.

I have two Columbia shirts and they're decent. However, my go to is stuff made by a company out of Florida called Salt Strong. It's geared towards saltwater guys (originally I was a salt only fisherman) but we're all out in the same sun whether we're fishing salt, fresh, or brackish waters. Their stuff is slightly cheaper than Columbia, Huk, Patagonia, etc and even better, it's all made in America. Great warranty and customer service. Definitely worth a look. 

I have always used Simms clothing for summer and winter... They have top quality products...
