If you guys needed one rod for each of the three categories below, what would they be (in terms of power, action, glass/graphite, length, etc), and what do you use if you already have a rod that covers some? 

 

- Jig/Frog/ heavy cover rod

-Spinnerbait/chatterbait/crank rod

-topwater rod

 

I'm curious as to what you guys use. I will be purchasing three rods to cover all these and want to see what others opinions are. 

7'6" H/mod fast- frogs n cover

7' mh/f - jigs, spinner bait, chatter bait

7' m or mh/mod treble hook lures.

I bass fished for about 20 years using 2 baitcasting 6 1/2' 5 power rods for jig and worm and nearly everything and 1 rod, a 7' 5 power custom salt water popping rod for crankbaits, spoons etc.  Today try to keep it down to 15 outfits.

Would a H rod used for jigs and frogs be a good choice for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits? I know the irod freds magic stick is supposed to have a soft tip, but would this still be too stiff for chatter and spinners?

You could get by with it if you were using 1/2 or 3/4 ounce spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. But for 1/2 ounce and under I prefer a medium heavy. 

Dvt Pretty much nailed it. 

Except for my 8 year old KVD 7' MH I use for frogs, everything else I fish is either on a MH 7' Carbonlite, or a Medium 7' Carbonlite. Works for me.

I am going to buy a MH for Jigs... I dont want to spend more than $150. Does the $50 between a $100 rod and a $50 rod make a big difference? I'm debating between another dobyns fury, Tatula xt, Irod Fiber or Irod genesis. 

The Swiss army knife of BC rods would probably be a 6'6" MH of some kind. That's the rod most people start out with. It won't do everything perfectly, but it will do most things. Personally, since you threw the frog in there, I'd probably choose a 7'. I don't like too fast a tip for spinnerbaits/buzzbaits so I'd make sure to use trailer hooks.

I already have a L power and M power spinning rods, so ive got finesse and t rigs pretty much covered. I want to start throwing a jig as my main lure, and will also throw spinners, chatters, and cranks. Ive pretty much narrowed this down to a 7' MHF casting rod, I just need to decide on one. Frog rods and topwater rods dont need to be expensive so i can buy those anytime. May buy iROD Fiber or Genesis, not sure if the extra $50 makes a big difference...

I have a loomis E6X MBR 903c which is a 7'6 MH fast action rod that I friggin love. I use it for everything lately.

The $50 will make a big difference if you get a regular Tatula instead of the XT. It’s a lot better rod. Probably a lot less than $50 difference in you shop around online and Amazon.

I fish from a kayak so I'm forced to keep to 4 rigs. I run a 7'6" heavy fast that I use for jigs, chatter baits, frogs and flipping. I run a 7'5" medium heavy fast for bottom contact like finesse jigs, c-rigs and t-rigs, sometimes spinnerbaits and rarely chatterbaits, this is what I use for top water when I actually throw them. I run a 7'2" medium heavy fast for moving baits like cranks, small swim baits, squarebills, spinnerbaits. Last is a 7'3" medium light spinning rig with a 2500 Sahara for finesse stuff, lately flick shakes.

 

The biggest difference for me was switching to daiwa tatula reels, makes it easy to get good casting distance with under-loaded rods. I've never had problems with trouble hooks on fast tip rods.
