Will a 1/0 EWG work with a 5 inch senko?

Featured Replies

I've yet to fish weedless.  Going to give it a shot.  Bought some of these in 1/0 size (only ones in stock).

I have 5 inch senkos at home.  I know the recommended size is 3/0 but any reason the 1/0 size wont work.  Whats the con of going smaller?  Less hookups, lost fish, more wear on plastics?

Thanks.

I use a 4/0 hook on my senkos. I believe you will miss a lot of fish using a 1/0 hook. Senkos tear up easy any way so that won't make a difference. I have cut a little bit off after they get torn up and used them again.

Yes

I sometimes fish mine on 2/0 EWGs when using lighter tackle. I don't know if I'd go any smaller but I think you could probably get away with it for the time being.

I use 1/0 circles when wacky rigging senkos and those hooks seem to work fine.

I was just hoping the 1/0 size Gamakatsu Skip Gaps would work for 5 inch senkos.

Maybe get smaller senkos?

A Texas Rigged 1.0 will get a lot of gut hooked fish.  I use a 4.0 or a 5.0 depending on wind and/or current.  If you are going to use the 1.0 just wacky rig or nose rig them.  Or..... you could go with a 3 or 4 inch Senko.

Would a 4 inch senko + 1/0 EWG gut hook less fish vs a 5"?  How come.

Here, these are the hooks.

I have fished 1/0 wide gap hooks with a 4 inch senko and actually have no problem with them. I hook most of the fish, and the hook doesnt interfere with the action of the senko. I dont gut hook many fish because I use floating mono or braid and see the twitch, reel down and set the hook asap. I use 2/0 the most though for 4 and 5 inch senkos and would rather use  at least a 2/0 with the bigger  senkos. I also use  3/0 , which is fine for the bigger senkos ( 5 inch and up ). I dont ever use bigger than 3/0 because I like the senko to sink slower than it would with a heavier hook. I dont use any weight with mine either.

That's what works best for me.

I have never used those hooks, but for spinning tackle I use 2/0 gamy ewg hooks.  They are a lot lighter wire than the 3/0 and work great.  I'm the exception I think

Exactly what I do. I go to the 3/0 Superline EWG when fishing them on heavy casting gear in thick cover.

When I first seriously got into fishing again last year, I started with senkos.  I "mistakenly" picked out 1/0 EWGs for the first weightless presentation of a worm in my life, and proceeded to catch fish.

I caught a lot of fish that way and still do, I've got more worm wiggling with a smaller hook.

I haven't gut hooked many fish, either.

In my opinion, 1/0 EWG worm hooks do just fine for 5" sticks.

On a positive note 1/0 works great on a baby brush hawg and what real fisherman dies not have at least a dozen bags of those ;)

I like a smaller hook than most on plastics, but a 1/0 on a 5 inch senko is way too small. Will you catch some fish with it, yeah, but you'll miss some too. I'd bend the point up a tad if it's all I had.

If all you have to work with for now is a 1/0 hook just shorten your senko about an inch and a half. Should be fine.

I dont understand this at all.  Gap is important to thickness of the bait.  Length would change nothing.  Rigging the bait on the thin end would make more sense to me.  Am I missing something?

I have had far better luck with a worm hook.....3/0 is the minimum, usually 4/0

A search of EWG will show why

This is how I view it.....it's why I get away with using 4/0 straight shank worm hooks on 15" worms. The hook gap should match the thickness, not length.

1/0 EWG hook for Senko = wacky rigged only !
