As the weather starts to cool down, the crankbait bite heats up.  So I wanted to start a thread about crankbait tips.  Here are mine, what are yours?

 

 

Mine would be don't be afraid to change colors and depth.  I don't get to crazy, a dark and a light, work the column and find the fish and what they want.  Today I went out with a 2-5 ft and an 8-12 ft diver.  They wanted to hit the 2-5 foot.  As luck would have it I got the color right on the first try.

New comers to bass fishing are so fortunate to have access to videos like this. When I was first learning I only had magazines and books. Nothing beats a well made instructional video...cuts years off the learning curve!

No real tips, just a mental reminder. 

 

Just know that this is often the wildest, most exciting time of year for bass fishing. The bass have the desperate instinct to beef up for the winter and are going mad, following those tight schools of game fish, mostly in shallow water. Crankbait is the perfect bait right now.

 

This is also the time of year where a fish finder is absolutely essential. This isn't like the spring where they are in the obvious spawning areas, or the summer where they are deep in the lake. They are wherever the bait fish want to go, and that can be anywhere.

I've noticed that sometimes the bass want a bigger bait and will ignore a small bait.  I usually start off casting a 1/2 ounce lipless crankbait, and in the summer I will go to the quarter ounce size if I don't get any bites.  In the fall I upsize to a 3/4 ounce lipless crankbait, and usually that will start producing bites.

To me fall crankbait fishing is just like summer . Try to figure out how deep the bass are and choose accordingly .

Run this "Starting to cool down" weather by me again? It was 90 while I was working on my tinny in the driveway today ?

 

Oh well, I just have to be patient... when it finally cools down here I'll be happier. I think I sweat more gallons this summer than I did in the last 5 years.

 

 

To me it's about finding where they're feeding. Once you find that spot, you've hit a bass goldmine.
