Presentation for beginners

Featured Replies

I was reading an article on bass fishing, and it was talking about fast, medium and slow presentations.. but never really explained what they were. Can you guys help me out by explaining to me what they are

I'll give four topwater examples, slow to fast:

popper

spook (walk the dog)

buzzbait

toad

Hopefully others will follow with similar lists.

Retrieve speed.

Slow is walking, medium is jogging and fast is running, dead stick is stopped and burning is a sprint.

Couple of slow presentations:

Jigs - slow on the bottom.

Punch rigs - slow on the bottom, yo yo, repeat.

Fast ~ crank bait

medium ~ spinnerbait chatterbait

Slow ~ bottom contact

Super Slow ~ drop shot.

You may be over thinking this one a bit, fast presentations are when you crank the reel handle quickly (retrieve the lure quickly). Slow presentations are the opposite, medium is in the middle. Some baits like a liples crank or jig can be worked fast or slow

And just to add clutter to the conversation, some baits you can fish at more than one speed.  For example, a spinnerbait can be "slow rolled" when the water is cold and you need the bait deep, medium speed to keep it in a specific depth in the water column and "burned" for a fast retrieve high in the water column sometimes actually creating a wake on top of the water.

I'll add a little more clutter to the mix. :)

I think the article didn't go into detail because speed is relative to the bait being used.  Working a spinner bait fast and working a worm fast are two completely different retrieve speeds.
