I guess what cracks me up about this is that the OP considers a 150 buck rod middle of the road gear. I have only one rod worth more than that, Avid X, and I got it for 100 on sale and may pick up a Dobyns Sierra for 110 on sale. 

 

Heck I thought I had solid middle of the road gear (60 to 110 for rods), guess I will have to keep catching tons of fish on my bargain bin crap;)

You're doing better than me. Most expensive piece of gear I own is my Pflueger Trion 30 spinning reel. I am looking at a pitching/flipping rig - but that whole combo will cost me only about 170 including line. Fixed income = limited budget.

Always interesting to see others point of view on value of gear and what is needed. I do appreciate on this forum that both ends are well represented, and nobody looks down on those of us with a smaller budget. I have participated in another forum years ago that if you had an ugly stick and didn't fish Lucky craft baits, you shouldn't even be fishing in their eyes lol.

I have heard of a lot of people running a drop shot on heavier lines (and sometimes larger hooks), it doesn't have to be a finesse technique. 50# braid does seem a bit overkill to me though even for a heavier presentation but who knows, maybe it does work for him. It's not something I have ever tried myself.

I use what I consider middle of the road gear, roughly $100-150 a rod and reel, yet I have seem people who catch more than I do and never use anything besides a Berkley Shock Rod. 

 

I also appreciate this forum as everyone is understanding and respectful of other people's budgets and always very helpful.

In the summer when the grass gets really thick, I'll dropshot the holes and edges of the grass with 30lb straight braid. I think around a lot of vegetation, the bass don't really notice the green braid along side all the grass.

 

In the winter when the grass dies off, I use 8lb fluro.

One of my favorite rods is a $100 Wright & McGill "Skeet Reese" (yellow) Shaky Head rod paired with a Plueger President $60 buck reel. Got the 

tip from a very good fisherman and went with it. Love it.
