Was having a cool discussion with a friend of mine who currently owns a hodgepodge of a collection. One thing we started talking about was how from brand to brand everyone uses a different style or different orientation. While some manufactures are offering proprietary seats from their parent company. It’s strange because the majority of casting rods on the market use the same reel seat.

Just think it it would be a interesting discussion to see what people prefer.

Below is is a picture of the Fuji VSS and SK reel seat as a example.

Interesting, check box 4. I know that’s popular with trout guys. Do you tape it or is it secured with some type of nut?

I use good quality electrical tape to put my reel on. I bought a Lews rod back in the 90s with a graphite handle like this and liked it a lot. I still fish that rod, and have another made by All Pro now. Smooth comfortable grip. Some guys use rod wrap, or self fusing tape, but electrical tape works well too

Ever try friction tape, stuff you would use on a hockey stick?

I've never tried it. I imaging it would work though

My favorite spinning rod grip is on my cabelas arachnid and xml rods.

They don't sell them anymore but this is close

My second favorite is probably the VSS nut on bottom though

I don't understand all that fancy lingo about reel seats, but I think you would call my spinning reel seat preference "nut on the bottom". My whole hand is placed in front of the reel stem and I hate threads right where my hand goes. In fact, I'm researching a future spinning rod purchase and immediately reject any rods with the threads at the top of the reel seat.

I can’t stand exposed threads casting or spinning. Looks like the build wasn’t thought all the way through. That’s another story tho.

That’s my preferred seat entire hand above the reel. Maybe have the stem between pinky and ring finger depending on what I’m doing at the moment.

I've got four different spinning rods with three different types of seats - two of my rods are Ugly Sticks.

So long as the seat holds the reel and doesn't interfere with my casting/retrieving...I don't care.

I like the Fuji ACS. With the reel stem between my pinky and ring fingers, my index finger rests just in front of the fore grip on the blank.

I have one of these...where you have to tape the reel ontot he seat.  Is there a right or wrong way location to place the reel?  Obviously too far back wouldn’t be good but I had thought about placing it further forward instead of the middle.

Try to get your reel to balance. Most of the time it's near the top.

I do not like threads on top. Bottom is my pref. My Premier is thread on

bottom and I really like the slim/narrow cork better than others I have

except for the old Shimano Compre cork model with the index finger cutout.

I'm with @Mobasser.  The Lew's Graphite Tennessee Handle was a great rod.  Still have five of them and managed to get one on ebay a couple of year ago for $280.  I've worn out, lost, or broken the three heavy action rods I used to have.  They were classic rods. I may have to move on soon.

I don't know this "kind" from that "kind", but I know it HAS to be down-locking. I will not tolerate all those backwards reel seats anymore. As for the best "kind", it's the Avid-X spinning setup. That one is ahead of any others I've seen.    jj

I really like the reel seats on the Shimano curado rods. I've seen a lot of people who really dislike them, is there something bad about it that I'm not picking up?

I agree. Nothing like dirt getting into those threads when setting the rod down while bank fishing.

My favorite isn't mentioned. It's my Field and Stream Tec Spec Elite reel seat. Nut on top with another nut on top of that that locks it in place. Very little to no play in the reel seat when set.

My friend zip-ties his reels down to the rod after tightening the nut.
