Suspending Lipless Crank Baits

Recommended Posts

I’ve always been curious about them, but never tried one. I don’t understand how they work. To get below the surface, most lures use a lip, or they sink by weight, but they just keep on sinking. I understand suspending cranks, but I don’t understand how a lure can get below the surface and stay at a certain depth without a lip.

I want one anyway. Who makes a good one?

Quite a few years ago I won a big pike tournament, over 100 boats, by running a suspending rattle trap and stopping it over the top of big cabbage beds. My partner and I were literally drifting through a huge bay that had about 30 other boats in it, and we were the only guys catching fish. For a while I didn’t even make a cast, just kept culling pike as my partner caught one after another on every cast!

The concave part of the head in front of the line tie acts like a lip to make it dive down, the rattle traps we were using only went a couple feet down but it was the perfect depth as the cabbage topped off just below the surface. They are a great bait to cover water with, but you can stop them for a second or two whenever you want and there’s no danger of sinking into the weeds.

Bill Lewis makes a Float-N-Trap & use to make a Red Zone Trap that suspended.

Cotton Cordell makes the Suspending Super Spot is not a sinking bait, instead staying within 3 feet of the surface even when paused.

The Sebile Flatt Shad  SU77 ~ Is 1/2 oz and suspends about 12-24 inches under the surface. It really will not sink or dive much deeper than that.  The 77 SU is designed for fishing over submerged weedbeds and through the tops of brush.  This one's great to work through shallow brush or shallow grass cover. It will not sink or dive too deep, and is a real sweet model that's best for working shallow cover in situations where the other models could get hung up more often. Plus, you can pause and suspend it right in front of a fish's face where you suspect one's hiding in the cover.

They are unfortunately a discontinued bait and can be a little tricky to find.

E-Bay may be a good place to start a search.  When you find one (or more) Buy it !

I love the Sebile SU 77 and it has caught me some good fish when the condition are right. I purchased about 5 lots on ebay back when they were discontinued and won a bunch of auctions, so I have a bunch and glad I do....

You can pitch them into tight spots and they suspend perfectly most of the time. The one issue I have had is I had to change hooks on a bunch of them, and now they do not suspend the same way, even taking off a split ring causes them to swim different or float slowly which is not bad.

I like to throw a suspending Lipless around the spawn or flats and will just let them soak in areas where I think fish are, or fish them above grass and not have to worry about snags etc....

Cotton Cordell has the Suspending Spot which is actually a good bait at times as well.

The one lipless crankbait I have never had luck with is the floating traps which I still think have potential...Just hard to cast and I never tie them on, but I like the idea...

I have some redzone traps. They're deadly at times early in the year in shallow water over grass.

So not a lot of options, apparently. Just the Ima, and maybe Cotton Cordell and Sebile (if they can be found).

I saw an article about making them out of wood and it's tempting me. On the plus side, I could make something totally custom, on the negative side, balancing it would probably be a nightmare.

I believe it, but it would end up costing me about $17 after shipping. A lot for me.

I'm going to keep my eye out at some of the local places, or wait for a sale, or make one, which would probably end up costing me more but it would be fun.

I have this addiction, obsession, whatever you want to call it for lipless crankbaits. Posting these kind of threads just feeds it more. I planned on trying out new offerings this season as I've already purchased rod and reel combos and lot's of other offerings to go with them.

Currently I'm the guy on the lake flinging a lipless fishing for bass, who pretends to be fishing for the fish of a thousand casts!

Thanks guys!

Currently on google looking for suspending lipless crankbaits!

I didn't realize Lewis Rattle Traps stop making them. I guess you can go old school and take a sinking one and drill it out and take ballast out until it suspends? Or you can buy the Ima Suspending Lipless Crankbait for 10 balloons, whatever works.

See if you can find some of the Bill lewis floating traps and use some suspend dots to weight them.

From one rattle bait freak to another - You're Welcome.

Here's your bait  . . . 1432076619_flattshad.jpg.15a70a6a6ab6427d653952ce4600f63b.jpg

I upgraded the hooks and also tossed in a surprise 'bonus' bait.

You'll have to wait until delvery (Saturday) to see that one.

Enjoy

Wow! That's very generous of you. I wasn't expecting something as nice as that one. Let alone a bonus bait to top it off!

The color looks like it'll be a winner in my local lake. The depth range of it looks to be perfect for a lot of the areas I like to fish in. There's lot's of submerged cover a couple of feet below the surface in my local lake. Making long casts between targets I often don't know what's there until it's too late. I'll get my baits back, but I feel I spoil the spots when I retrieve them.

I can't wait to give that bait a good workout!

Thanks Again!

Ken

May the bass gods reward you with a new PB this season!

I did see a UK seller on ebay that has some available at a reasonable price if not. Didn't look to have any color that would work for me at least.
