Looking at throwing more finesse jigs and finesse football jigs, that being said whats the recommendation for line? I hear a lot of people using anywhere from 12-15 lb fluorocarbon or 30-40lb braid to leader. My rod is only 7ft, but I'm confident with it. Really trying to narrow down line.

I have been happy with fluoro....Just spooling up some sunline myself to try this year

Been using 12 pound flouro with no complaints.

You're gonna get 100 different answers here and none are wrong except fluorocarbon (kidding, kidding).

 

I'm a braid to leader type, so 40-50 lb Power Pro and 12 lb Big Game with an FG knot.  No complaints at all.

Decided to run 14lb FC Sniper. Think this will fit my choice. Had just enough to fill the spool. 

I went through what you are talking about 3 years ago. I made an effort to throw more finesse jigs.

The two ways I prefer are these:

Set up one is a 6'6" medium spinning rod with 15lb braid to a 12lb leader either mono or flouro tied with an FG knot. I use a Daiwa Tatula rod and Tatula 3000 LT shallow spool reel. this is for 3/16 and 5/16 jigs.

 

Set up two is an old 6'9" Loomis Bronzeback casting rod with a Curado K spooled with 30lb braid to a 12-15 leader tied with an FG. This is for 5/16-1/2oz jigs. 

 

Both are excellent for me, but I'm sure there will lots of other ideas for you to choose from coming your way from other members.

10lb sunline xplasma to FC leader.

The more I try FC the more I prefer braid. 30# braid with a 10-12# fc leader is what I use.

What weight jig are you talking here? Finesse jigs can mean two things - 

 

1. A lightweight jig

2. A jig that half of the skirt is trimmed on the head side of the jig

 

 

That being said, the finesse jig I throw is normally a 5/16oz Siebert Outdoors Sniper jig and I normally use 15lb fluoro for those. I don't like going down to 12lb line because the shock of a hard hookset on a short leash can lead to break offs.

To add to this, hook size and wire thickness make a difference in what I'll use. Heavy wire hook I'll use a leader of 16 lb Sunline Shooter, light wire hook I'll use  12 lb Shooter.

 

For ultra finesse jigs, like the Keitech Tungsten Football jigs, I'll go down to 10 lb Shooter. However, I use those jigs on my jerkbait rod, and use more of a reel and sweep hookset

 My set-up is a 7MMH Tatula Elite AGS w/ Steez 103 XS. Most of the jigs will be 1/2 oz heads and under, down to 1/4 and half skirt trimmed up. My current choice for line is 14lb FC Sniper. 

I fish lots of small 1/8 to 1/4 jigs. I have two rods an 852c glx, with a alpha ct loaded with 10# flouro, the other is an 853c nrx with an alderbaren loaded with 12# flouro. This all works great in light cover areas but when the weeds get thicker and the fish get back into the cover I’ll fish 30# straight braid or braid to a 15# maxima ultra green leader. And any jigs over 1/2 oz always get fished on braid or braid to leader. 

Unless you fishing moderate cover there isn't any reason to use any mono/Copoly or FC over 12 lbs. I use 10 and 12 lb FC or coploymer line for jig fishing year around. My go is 10 lb without braid, just learn how to hook set with reel and rod sweep technique.

Thanks for the response Tom. I have an idea what you mean reel and rod sweep. Meaning reel up slack and sweep the rod left or right, versus just going straight up and back. Most of my fishing is done from the bank so weeds are fallen branches are always something I contend with. Guess that's why I chose 14lb FC Sniper vs the 12lb FC sniper in my bag.

Fishing jigs uphill through cover isn't easy for me and I have been jig fishing for a very long time. I would't go over 3/8 oz from shore and use whatever line works for you.

Reel set means crank the line tight very fast and sweep the rod firmly after you actually feel the weight or presence of the bass.

It seems like there's different definitions of a finesse jig, and the only ones that I use in this category are a War Eagle and Santone (both have heavier hooks than the original Jewell jigs), and if memory serves, they're around 3/8 oz.  I use a braid-to-leader line configuration, with 30 lb regular PP and 12 lb 100% fluorocarbon Trilene.  My rod is fairly light for a jig (even though Falcon rates it a MH), so I've found that heavier leader does nothing but increase manageability issues.  There are a lot of anglers better than I am using straight fluorocarbon, but I can't understand it.  It costs more and gives you less manageability, sensitivity, durability, castability, and probably some things I'm not thinking of.  A Crazy Alberto's is too easy to tie.

The hooksets on my long cast with braid to FC drive the hook home much better than full FC.

Back at this subject again lol!
