On-water hook sharpening / touch-up? Which sharpener?

Featured Replies

Lately been throwing a lot of 1/8 ounce jigs / grubs for smallies on a rocky stream and the occasional bottom snag and bottom bumping is clearly dulling my hooks. I've never been a good hook sharpener so out of touch with a good product to keep handy in the kayak to quickly resharpen. Any suggestions on a product and technique?

I have a very old sharpener with a groove in it, used to slide the hook point back and forth and thinking that is incorrect. Some hooks don't have clear cutting faces so not always sure which edge or method to get the point sharp.

Thanks

I use a product called Revlon Emeryl file. Nothing better, and the eye candy at Ulta is a +...

I use the Smith's Diamond Combo Sharpening Stone - and here's how I use it to often get hooks sharper than they were when they were brand new.

I bought that stone after watching this video, works great.

I use a Leatherman with the diamond file . Its a superb hook sharpener . Just a couple of  licks usually gets the hook thumbnail sticking sharp .  Plus it has the pliers and knife . I dont fish without it .

I fish a shallow rocky river as well and would be lost without my hook file! I've used several different brands of diamond file and they have all worked great. I don't sharpen them exactly like Glenn shows in his video, but I do check the sharpness like Glenn shows. If it digs into my thumbnail with very little pressure it's sharp.

Get a diamond file, watch some videos on Youtube and practice and you'll have super sharp hooks in no time!!

A few swipes down the groove and you're good to go.  It clips on your shirt pocket like a pen, so it's always handy.
