Are VMC hooks sharp?

Featured Replies

I think so.  I have snagged some small fish but this is my smallest yet.

Made my day! Reminds me of Mike Long!  ??     jj

Here I was ready to extol the virtues of certain VMC hooks and well they work for me in certain situations and opened this thread to find tongue firmly inserted in cheek. Well done, Jedi....

I regularly have to sharpen new VMC treble hooks right out of the package.  If they won't stick in your thumbnail, they are not sharp enough.

Then why do you continue to buy them?  VMC hooks aren't so unique that you couldn't replicate the same style in a brand that will be more consistently sharper for you. The main VMC hooks I use are the feathered trebles. They seem to do well for my small poppers...

Funny. I had the same thing happen to me fishing a Texas rig this year (Gammy tho, not VMC). I was pitching, working it slow, so I was surprised it was actually able to hook him.

Some baits , like rapala ... Come with the vmc hooks.. So he may be buying a lure that comes with said hooks attached.

I've never had an issue with them

Rapalas come with VMC for one reason...Rapala owns VMC - so it's in-house.

They also own Storm, Luhr-Jenson, and Blue Fox.

Yessir I'm aware. I'm just offering a possible situation where someone is getting vmc hooks and sharpening them.

VMC has several models of trebles like all the other companies like Mustad, Eagle Claw, Owner etc...I know the Rapala lures like Xraps and topwaters, DT's have the sure set hooks on the rear, and I believe they are expensive if you buy them as replacements.

The regular VMC Round Bend Trebles that Dick's carries which are short shank, 1x strong seem to be strong but not all that sharp out of the pack. But, for 2.50 they are decent. They are not easy to get out of your hand when one gets stuck in your palm or finger.....They seem to go in easy, especially the one I stepped on barefoot accidently a few weeks ago.

I find the VMC vanadium worm hooks to be good, especially for the price and availability in all sizes etc...But I will take the Berkley Fusion hooks for $3.99 over most of the standard brands in mid range pricing...I love those hooks.

I have a BUNCH of x-raps of all styles (shallow, shad, countdown) and not a single one has a sure set hook on it.

I actually took a couple off my DTs and put them on a couple poppers.  I heard someone call them sure snag hooks ?. I like em but they do get hung up more often and nowhere near a necessity for me .

It actually is a Rapala jerkbait but I had to use a different VMC hook to get it to suspend correctly.

I have tried them and to they're just meh.  They aren't the worst but not the best either.  For me, they don't stay sharp very long and depending on the hook they bend easy.

The sharpest I have tried have been X-Point, Trokar, and Owner (in that order) but I use Gamakatsu's most of the time.

I’m sorry. The have to be counterfeit. VMC’s are extremely sharp. I have some about 10 years old that are still dangerous to handle. Note: these did not come with commercial lures, they were stand alone upgrade hooks.
