Rainsut - Insulated or Not

Featured Replies

ALF is having a sale on Gill rainsuits.  They have insulated and non-insulated.  I could not decide, so I ordered both to try and send one back.  My original thinking was the non-insulated might be a better option because it will allow me to layer.  I can also use it in the summer months.  The insulated version however might be the ticket since I live in the Northwest and it gets cold at times here.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Your original thinking about layering underneath is the way I’d do it as long as you buy one that is big enough that has room. As expensive as a good rain suit can be, I can’t afford to have one for every season.

I buy uninsulated and layer.  Those things make me sweat anyway, no matter how they're vented etc.

I have, use & need both insulated & Non.

Neither one works for me when I need the other.

Lose the return shipping label ~

Done.

The non-insulated set arrives today.  You and I live on a similar parallel (Washington State here), so I might have to think more about this...I will try them both on tonight.

Gear that fits correctly is certainly a major concern.

I will often wear the non-insulated bibs & jacket (HUK) right over whatever I'm planning to fish in.

However when I need the insulated gear (Cabelas Guidewear Bibbs & Full Length Jacket) I always have a quality insulated breathable moisture wicking mid & base layer under it. Top layer is usually fleece pants & top.

All very comfy but unless I plan on stopping at Wal-Mart, not something I'm going to drive home in without the bibs on at least.

Think about this: if you have to choose one of them, which one would you rather have?  The obvious answer is the uninsulated one.  It is usable in July when its hot and muggy out and raining.  It is usable in May or November when its colder out and it rains, with layers underneath.  The insulated version is pretty useless in the hot summer months, you'll roast.  I only have one set and its uninsulated.  I don't usually do a lot of cold weather fishing so I never even considered the insulated version.

I'd go with the uninsulated one. Around here if it's cold enough for an insulated suit then the water is usually ice.

Thanks for all of the input.  I tried them both on last night and the insulated will definitely be too hot.  The non-insulated has plenty of room for layering.  Very nice suit for $250 bye-the-way.  I will be returning the insulated version.  Could not justify keeping both - I can get a new swimbait combo with the savings.

That was a very good choice! I bought a set of Guide Wear insulated years ago, they were 400.00-500.00 back then! It is quality gear, but overkill at least here where I fish. I fished a club tourney on Lake Shasta, it was snowing and very cold, but I was barbecuing in the stuff!

I should’ve looked into it better back then! They haven’t seen the light of day since. Now looking for a set of uninsulated.

One option, for me at least, is to keep the insulated bibs and get an uninsulated jacket.

I ordered the insulated Gill from them, should be here tomorrow. We can have some cold weather in Wisconsin. Anxious to try them. I have a pair of frog toggs that I like for when it’s hot. Half the time if it’s warm I don’t care if I get wet anyway.
