A-Jay's 2nd Annual Ice Out / Open Water Countdown Thread ~

Featured Replies

We're ice free here. It's been in the 40's and 50's but we got some rain and cold with blowing snow today. I guess I'm going to get out someplace this weekend. My son is driving up and he wants to fish. I've kind of become more of a "fair weather" angle over the years. I catch a lot of fish in August when it's not cold outside. LOL

  • The last 2 years here in the Minneapolis area have been ice out the first week of May... yes May not a typo... So I will predict our ice-off date at May 3, 2020.  Which is 172 days.  Argh..

  • We got 3 inches of snow Monday night, but I'm headed out Saturday we're supposed to be in the mid 50's.   Saw some guys getting gas this morning and they are pre-fishing for a 100+ boat tour

All that is left here are snow piles (and all the crap snow plows catch and pile up).

You guys talk about weather in the short run, but do you ever have any interest in weather in the longer run? I visit this page regularly. If you use the first set of pages or scroll down further, it can be interesting. I like to compare what it said in other years to what really happened. The "EC" areas can really bounce around either way.      jj

Came home to this nice surprise. We’re heading in the right direction. Warm temps, rain tonight, and breezy the next few days should eat a lot more. Unfortunately the overnight lows in the upper 20’s will slow the melt.

No fishing this weekend.

If this 40-50 degree rain keeps up, the ice will be gone soon on the lakes in central Michigan. ?

Been raining all day here too.

Still is I think.

While the next few nights will be right at or just below freezing,

forecast for the end of this week looks warmer again.

Fingers crossed.

I spy a lake that appears to be completely open. It’s a private lake though.

The ice out report from the wife states the main part of our lake is open. Too bad the boat launch still has ice.

A local pond is open and the river is too. Now if only I had a license, line on my reel, and time to go out...

Just got home. The south side of the lake is still iced which is to be expected. The little ‘bay’ where the launch is, still has ice, so no launching. I can see the G3 getting wet this weekend....maybe.

6poundbass got home from school and was already looking for a spot to wet a line. The kid is hooked on fishing.

Ran an errand that took me past several of the bays and smaller lakes of the Minnetonka 'group'. Ice is already darkening in spots and there's a bit of open water (1'-2') along a number of the shorelines.

We may have an early ice-out this year.

I checked local Lake Menderchuck yesterday.

Still locked up.

There is a chance that I could be wet in 10 days!

Is that with or without foreplay?

As this 2nd week of March comes to a close,

warmer temps, wind & rain seem to be dominating the local forecast.

We've seen a significant snow loss recently with more & more bare ground appearing daily.

Lakes are still iced over but I Like where this is trending . . .

My projected open water date is 34 days away.

Up here, it's looking like we might get out the 2nd week of April

Come to the southern part of the state.  ~75% of the lakes and ponds I fish in are open.  There was a guy trolling the ice edge for trout in Massabesic from Claire's Landing this past weekend.  Kingston Lake has also been open for a week or so.

I am planning my first outing of the year next week. My local pond is ice free so I try for some Perch.

If I hit the river it will be for casting practice. the waters are super cold with all the ice run-off from the mountains.

Hope the local brown bass population doesn't get the virus.
